"High priests"

  1.   10 And he that is the ahigh priest among his brethren, upon whose head the banointing oil was poured, and cthat is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes;

  2.   25 And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall abide in it unto the death of the ahigh priest, which was anointed with the holy oil.
          •  •  •

      28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

  3.   6 And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the ahigh priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

  4.   10 And it was so, when they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king’s scribe and the high priest came up, and they put up in bags, and told the amoney that was found in the house of the Lord.

  5.   4 Go up to aHilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the bsilver which is brought into the house of the Lord, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people:
          •  •  •

      8 ¶ And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the abook of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

  6.   4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the apriests of the second order, and the bkeepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the Lord all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Beth-el.

  7.   11 Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much amoney, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

  8.   9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.

  9.   1 Then Eliashib the ahigh priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they builded the bsheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel.
          •  •  •

      20 After him Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired the other piece, from the turning of the wall unto the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.

  10.   28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

  11.   1 In athe second year of Darius the king, in the sixth bmonth, in the first day of the month, came the word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet unto cZerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,
          •  •  •

      12 ¶ Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had asent him, and the people did fear before the Lord.
          •  •  •

      14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,

  12.   2 Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,
          •  •  •

      4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be astrong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts:

  13.   1 And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the aangel of the Lord, and bSatan standing at his right hand to cresist him.
          •  •  •

      8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the aBRANCH.

  14.   11 Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest;

  15.   3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called aCaiaphas,
          •  •  •

      51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a aservant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear.
          •  •  •

      57 ¶ And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to aCaiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

      58 But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest’s palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
          •  •  •

      62 And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?

      63 But Jesus aheld his bpeace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I cadjure thee by the dliving God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
          •  •  •

      65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken ablasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

  16.   26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?

  17.   47 And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
          •  •  •

      53 ¶ And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

      54 And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
          •  •  •

      60 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?

      61 But he held his peace, and aanswered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the bChrist, the Son of the Blessed?
          •  •  •

      63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?
          •  •  •

      66 ¶ And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:

  18.   2 aAnnas and Caiaphas being the bhigh priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

  19.   50 ¶ And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
          •  •  •

      54 ¶ Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.

  20.   49 And one of them, named aCaiaphas, being the bhigh priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
          •  •  •

      51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

  21.   10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and acut off his right ear. The servant’s name was bMalchus.
          •  •  •

      13 And led him away to aAnnas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
          •  •  •

      15 ¶ And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

      16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
          •  •  •

      19 ¶ The high apriest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
          •  •  •

      22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by astruck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
          •  •  •

      24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
          •  •  •

      26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

  22.   6 And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high apriest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.

  23.   17 ¶ Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with aindignation,
          •  •  •

      21 And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
          •  •  •

      24 Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.
          •  •  •

      27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,

  24.   1 Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

  25.   1 And Saul, yet breathing out athreatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

  26.   5 As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received aletters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

  27.   2 And the high priest aAnanias commanded them that stood by him to bsmite him on the mouth.
          •  •  •

      4 And they that stood by said, aRevilest thou God’s high priest?

      5 Then said Paul, I awist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the bruler of thy people.

  28.   1 And after five days aAnanias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.

  29.   2 Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,

  30.   17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make areconciliation for the sins of the people.

  31.   1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, aconsider the bApostle and cHigh Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

  32.   14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the aheavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

      15 For we have not an high priest awhich cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points btempted like as we are, yet without csin.

  33.   1 For every high priest taken from among men is aordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and bsacrifices for sins:
          •  •  •

      5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my aSon, to day have I begotten thee.
          •  •  •

      10 aCalled of God an bhigh priest after the order of Melchisedec.

  34.   20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an ahigh priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

  35.   26 aFor such an bhigh priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, cseparate from dsinners, and made ehigher than the fheavens;

      27 Who needeth not adaily, as those high priests, to offer up bsacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did conce, when he doffered up himself.

      28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the aoath, which was since the law, maketh the bSon, who is cconsecrated for evermore.

  36.   1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an ahigh priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
          •  •  •

      3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to aoffer.

  37.   7 But into the second went the ahigh priest alone bonce every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
          •  •  •

      11 But Christ being come an ahigh priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect btabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
          •  •  •

      25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the ahigh priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

  38.   21 And having an ahigh priest over the house of God;

  39.   11 For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp.

  40.   11 And the seats which were set apart for the ahigh priests, which were above all the other seats, he did ornament with pure gold; and he caused a breastwork to be built before them, that they might rest their bodies and their arms upon while they should speak lying and vain words to his people.

  41.   16 And now, Alma was their ahigh priest, he being the founder of their church.

  42.   7 And it came to pass that they were brought before the priests, and delivered up unto the apriests by the teachers; and the priests brought them before Alma, who was the bhigh priest.

  43.   42 And it came to pass that Alma was appointed to be the first achief judge, he being also the bhigh priest, his father having conferred the office upon him, and having given him the charge concerning all the affairs of the church.
    1. The account of Alma, who was the son of Alma, the first and chief judge over the people of Nephi, and also the high priest over the Church. An account of the reign of the judges, and the wars and contentions among the people. And also an account of a war between the Nephites and the Lamanites, according to the record of Alma, the first and chief judge.

  44.   4 And they began to establish the achurch more fully; yea, and many were bbaptized in the cwaters of Sidon and were joined to the church of God; yea, they were baptized by the hand of Alma, who had been consecrated the dhigh priest over the people of the church, by the hand of his father Alma.
          •  •  •

      18 Now Alma did not grant unto him the office of being ahigh priest over the church, but he retained the office of high priest unto himself; but he delivered the judgment-seat unto bNephihah.
          •  •  •

      20 And thus in the commencement of the ninth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, Alma delivered up the judgment-seat to aNephihah, and confined himself wholly to the bhigh priesthood of the holy order of God, to the ctestimony of the word, according to the spirit of revelation and prophecy.
    1. The words which Alma, the High Priest according to the holy order of God, delivered to the people in their cities and villages throughout the land. Comprising chapter 5.

  45.   3 I, Alma, having been aconsecrated by my father, Alma, to be a bhigh priest over the church of God, he having power and cauthority from God to do these things, behold, I say unto you that he began to establish a church in the dland which was in the borders of Nephi; yea, the land which was called the land of Mormon; yea, and he did baptize his brethren in the waters of Mormon.

  46.   11 Nevertheless, they hardened their hearts, saying unto him: Behold, we know that thou art Alma; and we know that thou art high priest over the church which thou hast established in many parts of the land, according to your tradition; and we are not of thy church, and we do not believe in such foolish traditions.
          •  •  •

      23 And after he had eaten and was filled he said unto Amulek: I am Alma, and am the ahigh priest over the church of God throughout the land.

  47.   6 And thus being called by this holy calling, and ordained unto the high priesthood of the holy order of God, to teach his commandments unto the children of men, that they also might enter into his arest

      7 This high priesthood being after the order of his Son, which order was from the foundation of the world; or in other words, being awithout beginning of days or end of years, being prepared from beternity to all eternity, according to his cforeknowledge of all things—

      8 Now they were aordained after this manner—being called with a holy calling, and ordained with a holy ordinance, and taking upon them the high priesthood of the holy order, which calling, and ordinance, and high priesthood, is without beginning or end—

      9 Thus they become ahigh priests forever, after the order of the Son, the Only Begotten of the Father, who is without beginning of days or end of years, who is full of bgrace, equity, and truth. And thus it is. Amen.

      10 Now, as I said concerning the holy order, or this ahigh priesthood, there were many who were ordained and became high priests of God; and it was on account of their exceeding bfaith and crepentance, and their righteousness before God, they choosing to repent and work righteousness rather than to perish;
          •  •  •

      14 Yea, humble yourselves even as the people in the days of aMelchizedek, who was also a high priest after this same order which I have spoken, who also took upon him the high priesthood forever.
          •  •  •

      18 But Melchizedek having exercised mighty faith, and received the office of the high priesthood according to the aholy order of God, did preach repentance unto his people. And behold, they did repent; and Melchizedek did establish peace in the land in his days; therefore he was called the prince of peace, for he was the king of Salem; and he did reign under his father.

  48.   5 Therefore, he that had been appointed chief captain over the armies of the Nephites, (and his name was Zoram, and he had two sons, Lehi and Aha)—now Zoram and his two sons, knowing that Alma was high priest over the church, and having heard that he had the spirit of prophecy, therefore they went unto him and desired of him to know whither the Lord would that they should go into the wilderness in search of their brethren, who had been taken captive by the Lamanites.

  49.   20 But behold they were more wise than many of the Nephites; for they took him, and bound him, and carried him before Ammon, who was a ahigh priest over that people.

      21 And it came to pass that he caused that he should be carried out of the land. And he came over into the land of Gideon, and began to preach unto them also; and here he did not have much success, for he was taken and bound and carried before the high priest, and also the chief judge over the land.

      22 And it came to pass that the high priest said unto him: Why do ye go about perverting the ways of the Lord? Why do ye teach this people that there shall be no Christ, to interrupt their rejoicings? Why do ye speak against all the prophecies of the holy prophets?

      23 Now the high priest’s name was Giddonah. And Korihor said unto him: Because I do not teach the foolish traditions of your fathers, and because I do not teach this people to bind themselves down under the foolish ordinances and performances which are laid down by ancient priests, to usurp power and authority over them, to keep them in ignorance, that they may not lift up their heads, but be brought down according to thy words.
          •  •  •

      29 Now when the high priest and the achief judge saw the hardness of his heart, yea, when they saw that he would brevile even against God, they would not make any reply to his words; but they caused that he should be bound; and they delivered him up into the hands of the officers, and sent him to the land of Zarahemla, that he might be brought before Alma, and the chief judge who was governor over all the land.

  50.   6 Thus they were led away by Amalickiah to dissensions, notwithstanding the preaching of Helaman and his brethren, yea, notwithstanding their exceedingly great care over the church, for they were ahigh priests over the church.
          •  •  •

      38 And Helaman and the ahigh priests did also maintain order in the church; yea, even for the space of four years did they have much peace and rejoicing in the church.

    1.   25 And so great was the prosperity of the church, and so many the blessings which were poured out upon the people, that even the high priests and the teachers were themselves astonished beyond measure.

    2.   21 Now there were many of the people who were exceedingly angry because of those who testified of these things; and those who were angry were chiefly the chief judges, and they who ahad been high priests and lawyers; yea, all those who were lawyers were angry with those who testified of these things.

        22 Now there was no lawyer nor judge nor high priest that could have power to condemn any one to death save their condemnation was signed by the governor of the land.
            •  •  •

        27 Now it came to pass that those judges had many friends and kindreds; and the remainder, yea, even almost all the lawyers and the high priests, did gather themselves together, and unite with the kindreds of those judges who were to be tried according to the law.

    3.   9 And it came to pass that his high priest murdered him as he sat upon his throne.

    4.   66 But the presiding elders, traveling bishops, high councilors, high priests, and elders, may have the privilege of ordaining, where there is no branch of the church that a vote may be called.

        67 Every president of the high priesthood (or presiding elder), abishop, high councilor, and bhigh priest, is to be ordained by the direction of a chigh council or general conference.

    5.   31 And inasmuch as ye aimpart of your bsubstance unto the cpoor, ye will do it unto me; and they shall be dlaid before the ebishop of my church and his fcounselors, two of the elders, or high priests, such as he shall appoint or has appointed and gset apart for that purpose.
            •  •  •

        71 And the elders or high priests who are appointed to assist the bishop as counselors in all things, are to have their families asupported out of the property which is bconsecrated to the bishop, for the good of the poor, and for other purposes, as before mentioned;

    6.   15 Wherefore they shall be ahigh priests who are worthy, and they shall be appointed by the bFirst Presidency of the Melchizedek Priesthood, except they be literal descendants of cAaron.
            •  •  •

        19 But, as a ahigh priest of the Melchizedek Priesthood has authority to officiate in all the lesser offices he may officiate in the office of bbishop when no literal descendant of Aaron can be found, provided he is called and set apart and ordained unto this power, under the hands of the First Presidency of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
            •  •  •

        22 And again, no bishop or high priest who shall be set apart for this ministry shall be tried or acondemned for any crime, save it be before the bFirst Presidency of the church;

    7.   1 Hearken, and listen to the voice of the Lord, O ye who have assembled yourselves together, who are the ahigh priests of my church, to whom the bkingdom and power have been given.

    8.   11 Q. What are we to understand by sealing the one ahundred and forty-four thousand, out of all the tribes of Israel—twelve thousand out of every tribe?
        A. We are to understand that those who are sealed are bhigh priests, ordained unto the holy order of God, to administer the everlasting gospel; for they are they who are ordained out of every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, by the angels to whom is given power over the nations of the earth, to bring as many as will come to the church of the cFirstborn.

    9.   1 The Lord spake unto Joseph Smith, Jun., saying: Hearken unto me, saith the Lord your God, who are ordained unto the ahigh priesthood of my church, who have assembled yourselves together;

    10.   1 Verily, verily, I say unto you my servant Frederick G. Williams: Listen to the voice of him who speaketh, to the word of the Lord your God, and hearken to the calling wherewith you are called, even to be a ahigh priest in my church, and a bcounselor unto my servant Joseph Smith, Jun.;

        2 Unto whom I have given the akeys of the kingdom, which belong always unto the bPresidency of the High Priesthood:

    11.   29 And again, the aoffices of elder and bishop are necessary bappendages belonging unto the high priesthood.
            •  •  •

        63 And as I said unto mine apostles, even so I say unto you, for you are mine aapostles, even God’s high priests; ye are they whom my Father hath bgiven me; ye are my cfriends;
            •  •  •

        111 And behold, the ahigh priests should travel, and also the elders, and also the lesser bpriests; but the cdeacons and dteachers should be appointed to ewatch over the church, to be standing ministers unto the church.

    12.   11 And they who are of the High Priesthood, whose names are not found written in the abook of the law, or that are found to have bapostatized, or to have been ccut off from the church, as well as the lesser priesthood, or the members, in that day shall dnot find an inheritance among the saints of the Most High;

    13.   127 And again, the order of the house prepared for the apresidency of the bschool of the cprophets, established for their instruction in all things that are expedient for them, even for all the dofficers of the church, or in other words, those who are called to the ministry in the church, beginning at the high priests, even down to the deacons—

    14.   1 A aWord OF Wisdom, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion—

    15.   1 This day a general council of twenty-four high priests assembled at the house of Joseph Smith, Jun., by revelation, and proceeded to organize the ahigh council of the church of Christ, which was to consist of twelve high priests, and one or three presidents as the case might require.
            •  •  •

        3 Joseph Smith, Jun., Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams were acknowledged presidents by the voice of the council; and Joseph Smith, Sen., John Smith, Joseph Coe, John Johnson, Martin Harris, John S. Carter, Jared Carter, Oliver Cowdery, Samuel H. Smith, Orson Hyde, Sylvester Smith, and Luke Johnson, high priests, were chosen to be a standing council for the church, by the unanimous voice of the council.
            •  •  •

        5 The number composing the council, who voted in the name and for the church in appointing the above-named councilors were forty-three, as follows: nine high priests, seventeen elders, four priests, and thirteen members.
            •  •  •

        7 These seven shall have power to appoint other high priests, whom they may consider worthy and capable to act in the place of absent councilors.

        8 Voted: that whenever any vacancy shall occur by the death, removal from office for transgression, or removal from the bounds of this church government, of any one of the above-named councilors, it shall be filled by the nomination of the apresident or presidents, and sanctioned by the voice of a general council of high priests, convened for that purpose, to act in the name of the church.
            •  •  •

        24 The high priests, when abroad, have power to call and organize a council after the manner of the foregoing, to settle difficulties, when the parties or either of them shall request it.

        25 And the said council of high priests shall have power to appoint one of their own number to preside over such council for the time being.
            •  •  •

        28 This council of high priests abroad is only to be called on the most adifficult cases of church matters; and no common or ordinary case is to be sufficient to call such council.

        29 The traveling or located high priests abroad have power to say whether it is necessary to call such a council or not.

        30 There is a distinction between the ahigh council or traveling high priests abroad, and the traveling high council composed of the twelve bapostles, in their decisions.

    16.   1 It is my will that my servant Warren A. Cowdery should be appointed and ordained a presiding high priest over my church, in the land of aFreedom and the regions round about;

    17.   2 Why the first is called the aMelchizedek Priesthood is because bMelchizedek was such a great high priest.

        9 The aPresidency of the High Priesthood, after the order of Melchizedek, have a right to officiate in all the offices in the church.

        10 aHigh priests after the order of the Melchizedek Priesthood have a bright to officiate in their own cstanding, under the direction of the presidency, in administering spiritual things, and also in the office of an elder, dpriest (of the Levitical order), teacher, deacon, and member.

        11 An elder has a right to officiate in his stead when the high priest is not present.

        12 The high priest and aelder are to administer in spiritual things, agreeable to the covenants and commandments of the church; and they have a right to officiate in all these offices of the church when there are no higher authorities present.
            •  •  •

        17 But as a high priest of the aMelchizedek Priesthood has authority to officiate in all the lesser offices, he may officiate in the office of bbishop when no literal descendant of Aaron can be found, provided he is called and cset apart and ordained unto this power by the hands of the dPresidency of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
            •  •  •

        22 Of the aMelchizedek Priesthood, three bPresiding High Priests, chosen by the body, appointed and ordained to that office, and cupheld by the confidence, faith, and prayer of the church, form a quorum of the Presidency of the Church.
            •  •  •

        53 Three years previous to the death of Adam, he called Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, and Methuselah, who were all ahigh priests, with the residue of his posterity who were righteous, into the valley of bAdam-ondi-Ahman, and there bestowed upon them his last blessing.
            •  •  •

        64 Then comes the High Priesthood, which is the greatest of all.

        65 Wherefore, it must needs be that one be appointed of the High aPriesthood to preside over the priesthood, and he shall be called President of the High Priesthood of the Church;

        66 Or, in other words, the aPresiding High Priest over the High Priesthood of the Church.
            •  •  •

        69 Nevertheless a abishop must be chosen from the High bPriesthood, unless he is a cliteral descendant of Aaron;
            •  •  •

        71 Nevertheless, a high priest, that is, after the order of Melchizedek, may be set apart unto the ministering of temporal things, having a aknowledge of them by the Spirit of truth;
            •  •  •

        73 This is the duty of a bishop who is not a literal descendant of Aaron, but has been ordained to the High Priesthood after the order of Melchizedek.
            •  •  •

        76 But a literal descendant of Aaron has a legal right to the presidency of this priesthood, to the akeys of this ministry, to act in the office of bishop independently, without counselors, except in a case where a President of the High Priesthood, after the order of Melchizedek, is tried, to sit as a judge in Israel.
            •  •  •

        78 Again, verily, I say unto you, the most important business of the church, and the most adifficult cases of the church, inasmuch as there is not satisfaction upon the decision of the bishop or judges, it shall be handed over and carried up unto the council of the church, before the bPresidency of the High Priesthood.

        79 And the Presidency of the council of the High Priesthood shall have power to call other high priests, even twelve, to assist as counselors; and thus the Presidency of the High Priesthood and its counselors shall have power to decide upon testimony according to the laws of the church.
            •  •  •

        82 And inasmuch as a President of the High Priesthood shall transgress, he shall be had in remembrance before the acommon council of the church, who shall be assisted by twelve counselors of the High Priesthood;
            •  •  •

        91 And again, the duty of the President of the office of the High Priesthood is to apreside over the whole church, and to be like unto bMoses

    18.   133 And again, I give unto you Don C. Smith to be a president over a quorum of high priests;
            •  •  •

        136 I give unto him Amasa Lyman and Noah Packard for counselors, that they may preside over the quorum of high priests of my church, saith the Lord.

    19.   41 aNoah, who gave warning of the flood; bShem, the great chigh priest; dAbraham, the father of the faithful; eIsaac, fJacob, and Moses, the great glaw-giver of Israel;

    20.   2 And, finding there was greater ahappiness and peace and rest for me, I sought for the blessings of the fathers, and the right whereunto I should be ordained to administer the same; having been myself a follower of brighteousness, desiring also to be one who possessed great cknowledge, and to be a greater follower of righteousness, and to possess a greater knowledge, and to be a father of many dnations, a prince of peace, and edesiring to receive instructions, and to keep the commandments of God, I became a rightful heir, a fHigh Priest, holding the right belonging to the fathers.
