Then take the box of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, Thus saith the Lord, I have anointed thee king over Israel. Then open the door, and flee, and tarry not.
• • •
12
And they said, It is false; tell us now. And he said, Thusandthus spake he to me, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I have anointed thee king over Israel.
• • •
18
So there went one on horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. And the watchman told, saying, The messenger came to them, but he cometh not again.

¶ At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?

Andthus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up.
3

3
And say, Thus saith the Lord God unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy nativity is of the land of Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite.

3
And say, Thus saith the Lord God; A great eagle with great wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar:

Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord; Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also furbished:
• • •
28
¶ And thou, son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord God concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is furbished, to consume because of the glittering:
4
And the names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sons and daughters. Thuswere their names; Samaria is Aholah, and Jerusalem Aholibah.

¶ Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.
25
Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.
14
He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches:
11
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

17
Andthus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.
8
And being thus overcome with the Spirit, he was carried away in a vision, even that he saw the heavens open, and he thought he saw God sitting upon his throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels in the attitude of singing and praising their God.
12
Andthus Laman and Lemuel, being the eldest, did murmur against their father. And they did murmur because they knew not the dealings of that God who had created them.
16
Andthus my father, Lehi, did discover the genealogy of his fathers. And Laban also was a descendant of Joseph, wherefore he and his fathers had kept the records.
6
But the Lord knoweth all things from the beginning; wherefore, he
prepareth a way to accomplish all his works among the children of men;
for behold, he hath all power unto the fulfilling of all his words. Andthus it is. Amen.
30
And now I make an end of speaking concerning the things which I saw while I was carried away in the spirit; and if all the things which I saw are not written, the things which I have written are true. Andthus it is. Amen.
36
Wherefore, the wicked are rejected from the righteous, and also from that tree of life, whose fruit is most precious and most desirable above all other fruits; yea, and it is the greatest of all the gifts of God. Andthus I spake unto my brethren. Amen.
8
Andthus my father had fulfilled all the commandments of the Lord which had been given unto him. And also, I, Nephi, had been blessed of the Lord exceedingly.
• • •
29
And there was also written upon them a new
writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us understanding
concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. Andthus we see that by small means the Lord can bring about great things.
• • •
36
Andthus they did murmur against my father, and also against me; and they were desirous to return again to Jerusalem.
3
Andthus we see that the commandments of God must be fulfilled. And if it so be that the children of men keep the commandments of God he doth nourish them, and strengthen them, and
provide means whereby they can accomplish the thing which he has
commanded them; wherefore, he did provide means for us while we did
sojourn in the wilderness.
• • •
18
Andthus my brethren did complain against me, and
were desirous that they might not labor, for they did not believe that I
could build a ship; neither would they believe that I was instructed of
the Lord.
• • •
52
And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said many things unto my brethren, insomuch that they were confounded and
could not contend against me; neither durst they lay their hands upon
me nor touch me with their fingers, even for the space of many days. Now
they durst not do this lest they should wither before me, so powerful
was the Spirit of God; andthus it had wrought upon them.
17
Andthus saith the
Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I have sent him, the Lord
thy God who teacheth thee to profit, who leadeth thee by the way thou
shouldst go, hath done it.
31
Wherefore, ye need not suppose that I and my father are the only ones that have testified, and also taught them. Wherefore, if ye shall be obedient to the commandments, and endure to the end, ye shall be saved at the last day. Andthus it is. Amen.
14
Andthus prophesied Joseph, saying: Behold, that seer will the Lord bless; and
they that seek to destroy him shall be confounded; for this promise,
which I have obtained of the Lord, of the fruit of my loins, shall be
fulfilled. Behold, I am sure of the fulfilling of this promise;
3
For it shall come to pass in that day that the churches which are built up, and not unto the Lord, when the one shall say unto the other: Behold, I, I am the Lord’s; and the others shall say: I, I am the Lord’s; andthus shall every one say that hath built up churches, and not unto the Lord—
• • •
21
And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well—andthus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell.
22
And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none—andthus he whispereth in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance.
11
Wherefore, the people were desirous to retain in remembrance his name. And whoso should reign in his stead were called by the people, second Nephi, third Nephi, and so forth, according to the reigns of the kings; andthus they were called by the people, let them be of whatever name they would.
66
For it grieveth me that I should lose the trees of my vineyard;
wherefore ye shall clear away the bad according as the good shall grow,
that the root and the top may be equal in strength, until the good shall overcome the bad, and the bad be hewn down and cast into the fire, that they cumber not the ground of my vineyard; andthus will I sweep away the bad out of my vineyard.
• • •
68
And the branches of the natural tree will I graft into the natural branches of the tree; andthus will I bring them together again, that they shall bring forth the natural fruit, and they shall be one.
• • •
74
Andthus they
labored, with all diligence, according to the commandments of the Lord
of the vineyard, even until the bad had been cast away out of the
vineyard, and the Lord had preserved unto himself that the trees had become again the natural fruit; and they became like unto one body; and the fruits were equal; and the Lord of the vineyard had preserved unto himself the natural fruit, which was most precious unto him from the beginning.
9
Andthus being
prepared to meet the Lamanites, they did not prosper against us. But
the word of the Lord was verified, which he spake unto our fathers,
saying that: Inasmuch as ye will keep my commandments ye shall prosper
in the land.
24
Andthus saith the
Lord: They shall stand as a bright testimony against this people, at the
judgment day; whereof they shall be judged, every man according to his
works, whether they be good, or whether they be evil.
• • •
27
And their torment is as a lake of fire and brimstone, whose flames are unquenchable, and whose smoke ascendeth up forever and ever. Thus hath the Lord commanded me. Amen.
2
And I set guards round about the land, that the Lamanites might not come upon us again unawares and destroy us; andthus I did guard my people and my flocks, and keep them from falling into the hands of our enemies.
• • •
5
And I did cause that the women should spin, and toil, and work, and work all manner of fine linen, yea, and cloth of every kind, that we might clothe our nakedness; andthus we did prosper in the land—thus we did have continual peace in the land for the space of twenty and two years.
• • •
17
Andthus they have taught their children that they should hate them, and that they should murder them, and that they should rob and plunder them, and do all they could to destroy them; therefore they have an eternal hatred towards the children of Nephi.
6
Yea, andthus they were supported in their laziness, and in their idolatry, and in their whoredoms, by the taxes which king Noah had put upon his people; thus did the people labor exceedingly to support iniquity.
• • •
13
And it came to pass that he caused many buildings to be built in the land Shilom; and
he caused a great tower to be built on the hill north of the land
Shilom, which had been a resort for the children of Nephi at the time
they fled out of the land; andthus he did do with the riches which he obtained by the taxation of his people.
• • •
19
And now, because of this great victory they
were lifted up in the pride of their hearts; they did boast in their own
strength, saying that their fifty could stand against thousands of the
Lamanites; andthus they did boast, and did delight in blood, and the shedding of the blood of their brethren, and this because of the wickedness of their king and priests.
20
And it came to pass that there was a man among them whose name was Abinadi; and he went forth among them, and began to prophesy, saying: Behold, thus saith the Lord, andthus hath he commanded me, saying, Go forth, and say unto this people, thus saith the Lord—Wo be unto this people, for I have seen their abominations, and their wickedness, and their whoredoms; and except they repent I will visit them in mine anger.
• • •
25
And except they repent in sackcloth and ashes, and cry mightily to the Lord their God, I will not hear their prayers, neither will I deliver them out of their afflictions; andthus saith the Lord, andthus hath he commanded me.
5
Andthus the flesh becoming subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God, suffereth temptation, and yieldeth not to the temptation, but suffereth himself to be mocked, and scourged, and cast out, and disowned by his people.
• • •
8
Andthus God
breaketh the bands of death, having gained the victory over death;
giving the Son power to make intercession for the children of men—
• • •
24
And these are those who have part in the first resurrection; and these are they that have died before Christ came, in their ignorance, not having salvation declared unto them. Andthus the Lord bringeth about the restoration of these; and they have a part in the first resurrection, or have eternal life, being redeemed by the Lord.
22
Andthus he commanded them to preach. Andthus they became the children of God.
• • •
28
Andthus they should impart of their substance of their own free will and good desires towards God, and to those priests that stood in need, yea, and to every needy, naked soul.
15
Therefore the Lamanites did spare their lives, and took them captives and carried them back to the land of Nephi, and
granted unto them that they might possess the land, under the
conditions that they would deliver up king Noah into the hands of the
Lamanites, and deliver up their property, even one half of all they possessed, one half of their gold, and their silver, and all their precious things, andthus they should pay tribute to the king of the Lamanites from year to year.
4
And he appointed teachers of the brethren of Amulon in every land which was possessed by his people; andthus the language of Nephi began to be taught among all the people of the Lamanites.
• • •
7
Andthus the Lamanites began to increase in riches, and began to trade one with another and wax great, and began to be a cunning and a wise people, as to the wisdom of the world, yea, a very cunning people, delighting in all manner of wickedness and plunder, except it were among their own brethren.
22
Andthus,
notwithstanding there being many churches they were all one church, yea,
even the church of God; for there was nothing preached in all the
churches except it were repentance and faith in God.
4
Andthus did the Spirit of the Lord work upon them, for they were the very vilest of sinners. And
the Lord saw fit in his infinite mercy to spare them; nevertheless they
suffered much anguish of soul because of their iniquities, suffering
much and fearing that they should be cast off forever.
20
But behold, he did deliver them because they did humble themselves before him; and because they cried mightily unto him he did deliver them out of bondage; andthus
doth the Lord work with his power in all cases among the children of
men, extending the arm of mercy towards them that put their trust in
him.
• • •
23
And he enacteth laws, and sendeth them forth among his people, yea, laws after the manner of his own wickedness; and whosoever doth not obey his laws he causeth to be destroyed; and whosoever doth rebel against him he will send his armies against them to war, and if he can he will destroy them; andthus an unrighteous king doth pervert the ways of all righteousness.
• • •
44
Andthus commenced the reign of the judges throughout all the land of Zarahemla, among all the people who were called the Nephites; and Alma was the first and chief judge.
• • •
47
Andthus ended the reign of the kings over the people of Nephi; andthus ended the days of Alma, who was the founder of their church.
26
And when the priests left their labor to
impart the word of God unto the people, the people also left their
labors to hear the word of God. And when the priest had imparted unto them the word of God they all returned again diligently unto their labors; and
the priest, not esteeming himself above his hearers, for the preacher
was no better than the hearer, neither was the teacher any better than
the learner; andthus they were all equal, and they did all labor, every man according to his strength.
• • •
28
Andthus they did establish the affairs of the church; andthus they began to have continual peace again, notwithstanding all their persecutions.
• • •
30
Andthus, in their
prosperous circumstances, they did not send away any who were naked, or
that were hungry, or that were athirst, or that were sick, or that had
not been nourished; and they did not set their hearts upon riches; therefore they were liberal to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, whether out of the church or in the church, having no respect to persons as to those who stood in need.
31
Andthus they did prosper and become far more wealthy than those who did not belong to their church.
6
Andthus they did assemble themselves together to cast in their voices concerning the matter; and they were laid before the judges.
• • •
13
Andthus they were prepared to meet the Amlicites at the time of their coming. And there were appointed captains, and higher captains, and chief captains, according to their numbers.
• • •
34
Andthus he cleared
the ground, or rather the bank, which was on the west of the river
Sidon, throwing the bodies of the Lamanites who had been slain into the
waters of Sidon, that thereby his people might have room to cross and contend with the Lamanites and the Amlicites on the west side of the river Sidon.
27
For every man receiveth wages of him whom he listeth to obey, and this according to the words of the spirit of prophecy; therefore let it be according to the truth. Andthus endeth the fifth year of the reign of the judges.
5
And it came to pass in the seventh
year of the reign of the judges there were about three thousand five
hundred souls that united themselves to the church of God and were baptized. Andthus ended the seventh year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi; and there was continual peace in all that time.
• • •
9
Andthus, in this
eighth year of the reign of the judges, there began to be great
contentions among the people of the church; yea, there were envyings, and strife, and malice, and persecutions, and pride, even to exceed the pride of those who did not belong to the church of God.
10
Andthus ended the eighth year of the reign of the judges; and the wickedness of the church was a great stumbling-block to those who did not belong to the church; andthus the church began to fail in its progress.
• • •
20
Andthus in the
commencement of the ninth year of the reign of the judges over the
people of Nephi, Alma delivered up the judgment-seat to Nephihah, and
confined himself wholly to the high priesthood of the holy order of
God, to the testimony of the word, according to the spirit of revelation
and prophecy.
4
Andthus they began to establish the order of the church in the city of Zarahemla.
• • •
8
And Alma went and
began to declare the word of God unto the church which was established
in the valley of Gideon, according to the revelation of the truth of the
word which had been spoken by his fathers, and
according to the spirit of prophecy which was in him, according to the
testimony of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who should come to redeem his
people from their sins, and the holy order by which he was called. Andthus it is written. Amen.
27
And now, may the peace of God rest upon you, and upon your houses and lands, and upon your flocks and herds, and all that you possess, your women and your children, according to your faith and good works, from this time forth and forever. Andthus I have spoken. Amen.
2
Andthus ended the ninth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
• • •
7
Now it was the custom of the people of Nephi to call their lands, and their cities, and their villages, yea, even all their small villages, after the name of him who first possessed them; andthus it was with the land of Ammonihah.
2
Now if a man owed another, and he would not pay that which he did owe, he was complained of to the judge; and the judge executed authority, and sent forth officers that the man should be brought before him; and he judged the man according to the law and the evidences which were brought against him, andthus the man was compelled to pay that which he owed, or be stripped, or be cast out from among the people as a thief and a robber.
• • •
46
Now, when Amulek had finished these words the people began again to be astonished, and also Zeezrom began to tremble. Andthus ended the words of Amulek, or this is all that I have written.
21
What does the scripture mean, which saith that God placed cherubim and a flaming sword on the east of the garden of Eden, lest our first parents should enter and partake of the fruit of the tree of life, and live forever? Andthus we see that there was no possible chance that they should live forever.
22
Now Alma said unto him: This is the thing which I was about to explain.
Now we see that Adam did fall by the partaking of the forbidden fruit,
according to the word of God; andthus we see, that by his fall, all mankind became a lost and fallen people.
• • •
26
And now behold, if it were possible that our first parents could have gone forth and partaken of the tree of life they would have been forever miserable, having no preparatory state; andthus the plan of redemption would have been frustrated, and the word of God would have been void, taking none effect.
4
Andthus they have
been called to this holy calling on account of their faith, while others
would reject the Spirit of God on account of the hardness of their
hearts and blindness of their minds, while, if it had not been for this they might have had as great privilege as their brethren.
• • •
6
Andthus being called by this holy calling, and
ordained unto the high priesthood of the holy order of God, to teach
his commandments unto the children of men, that they also might enter
into his rest—
• • •
9
Thus they become high priests forever, after
the order of the Son, the Only Begotten of the Father, who is without
beginning of days or end of years, who is full of grace, equity, and truth. Andthus it is. Amen.
• • •
28
But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, andthus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering;
22
And many such things, yea, all manner of such things did they say unto them; andthus they did mock them for many days. And they did withhold food from them that they might hunger, and water that they might thirst; and they also did take from them their clothes that they were naked; andthus they were bound with strong cords, and confined in prison.
• • •
29
Now the people having heard a great noise came running together by multitudes to know the cause of it; and when they saw Alma and Amulek coming forth out of the prison, and the walls thereof had fallen to the earth, they were struck with great fear, and fled from the presence of Alma and Amulek even as a goat fleeth with her young from two lions; andthus they did flee from the presence of Alma and Amulek.
9
Andthus ended the eleventh year of the judges, the Lamanites having been driven out of the land, and the people of Ammonihah were destroyed; yea, every living soul of the Ammonihahites was destroyed, and also their great city, which they said God could not destroy, because of its greatness.
• • •
12
And the Lamanites did not come again to war against the Nephites until the fourteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. Andthus for three years did the people of Nephi have continual peace in all the land.
• • •
15
Andthus did Alma and Amulek go forth, and also many more who had been chosen for the work, to preach the word throughout all the land. And
the establishment of the church became general throughout the land, in
all the region round about, among all the people of the Nephites.
8
Andthus they
departed into the wilderness with their numbers which they had selected,
to go up to the land of Nephi, to preach the word of God unto the
Lamanites.
• • •
18
Now Ammon being the chief among them, or rather he did administer unto them, and
he departed from them, after having blessed them according to their
several stations, having imparted the word of God unto them, or
administered unto them before his departure; andthus they took their several journeys throughout the land.
• • •
20
And as Ammon entered the land of Ishmael, the Lamanites took him and bound him, as was their custom to bind all the Nephites who fell into their hands, and carry them before the king; andthus
it was left to the pleasure of the king to slay them, or to retain them
in captivity, or to cast them into prison, or to cast them out of his
land, according to his will and pleasure.
21
Andthus Ammon was carried before the king who was over the land of Ishmael; and his name was Lamoni; and he was a descendant of Ishmael.
• • •
31
And it came to pass that he flattered them by his words, saying: My brethren, be of good cheer and let us go in search of the flocks, and we will gather them together and bring them back unto the place of water; andthus we will preserve the flocks unto the king and he will not slay us.
• • •
36
But Ammon stood forth and began to cast stones at them with his sling; yea, with mighty power he did sling stones amongst them; andthus
he slew a certain number of them insomuch that they began to be
astonished at his power; nevertheless they were angry because of the
slain of their brethren, and they were
determined that he should fall; therefore, seeing that they could not
hit him with their stones, they came forth with clubs to slay him.
6
For he had slain many of them because their brethren had scattered their flocks at the place of water; andthus, because they had had their flocks scattered they were slain.
• • •
13
And one of the king’s servants said unto him,
Rabbanah, which is, being interpreted, powerful or great king,
considering their kings to be powerful; andthus he said unto him: Rabbanah, the king desireth thee to stay.
• • •
23
And the king answered him, and said: Yea, I will believe all thy words. Andthus he was caught with guile.
14
Now Ammon seeing the Spirit of the Lord poured out according to his
prayers upon the Lamanites, his brethren, who had been the cause of so
much mourning among the Nephites, or among all the people of God because
of their iniquities and their traditions, he fell upon his knees, and began to pour out his soul in prayer and thanksgiving to God for what he had done for his brethren; and he was also overpowered with joy; andthus they all three had sunk to the earth.
• • •
28
Andthus the contention began to be exceedingly sharp among them. And while they were thus contending, the woman servant who had caused the multitude to be gathered together came, and when she saw the contention which was among the multitude she was exceedingly sorrowful, even unto tears.
• • •
34
And behold, many did declare unto the people that they had seen angels and had conversed with them; andthus they had told them things of God, and of his righteousness.
• • •
36
Andthus the work of the Lord did commence among the Lamanites; thus the Lord did begin to pour out his Spirit upon them; and we see that his arm is extended to all people who will repent and believe on his name.
27
And it came to pass that the king sent a
proclamation throughout all the land, amongst all his people who were in
all his land, who were in all the regions round about, which was
bordering even to the sea, on the east and on the west, and
which was divided from the land of Zarahemla by a narrow strip of
wilderness, which ran from the sea east even to the sea west, and round about on the borders of the seashore, and
the borders of the wilderness which was on the north by the land of
Zarahemla, through the borders of Manti, by the head of the river Sidon,
running from the east towards the west—andthus were the Lamanites and the Nephites divided.
28
Now, the more idle part of the Lamanites lived in the wilderness, and dwelt in tents; and they were spread through the wilderness on the west, in the land of Nephi; yea, and also on the west of the land of Zarahemla, in the borders by the seashore, and on the west in the land of Nephi, in the place of their fathers’ first inheritance, andthus bordering along by the seashore.
29
And also there were many Lamanites on the east by the seashore, whither the Nephites had driven them. Andthus
the Nephites were nearly surrounded by the Lamanites; nevertheless the
Nephites had taken possession of all the northern parts of the land
bordering on the wilderness, at the head of the river Sidon, from the
east to the west, round about on the wilderness side; on the north, even
until they came to the land which they called Bountiful.
• • •
32
And now, it was only the distance of a day and a half’s journey for a Nephite, on the line Bountiful and the land Desolation, from the east to the west sea; andthus the land of Nephi and the land of Zarahemla were nearly surrounded by water, there being a small neck of land between the land northward and the land southward.
33
And it came to pass that the Nephites had inhabited the land Bountiful, even from the east unto the west sea, andthus the Nephites in their wisdom, with their guards and
their armies, had hemmed in the Lamanites on the south, that thereby
they should have no more possession on the north, that they might not
overrun the land northward.
3
Andthus they might go forth and preach the word according to their desires, for the king had been converted unto the Lord, and
all his household; therefore he sent his proclamation throughout the
land unto his people, that the word of God might have no obstruction,
but that it might go forth throughout all the land, that his people
might be convinced concerning the wicked traditions of their fathers, and that they might be convinced that they were all brethren, and that they ought not to murder, nor to plunder, nor to steal, nor to commit adultery, nor to commit any manner of wickedness.
4
And now it came to pass that when the king had sent forth this proclamation, that Aaron and his brethren went forth from city to city, and from one house of worship to another, establishing churches, and consecrating priests and teachers throughout the land among the Lamanites, to preach and to teach the word of God among them; andthus they began to have great success.
19
Andthus we see that, when these Lamanites were brought to believe and to know the truth, they were firm, and would suffer even unto death rather than commit sin; andthus we see that they buried their weapons of peace, or they buried the weapons of war, for peace.
• • •
21
Now when the people saw that they were coming against them they went out to meet them, and prostrated themselves before them to the earth, and began to call on the name of the Lord; andthus they were in this attitude when the Lamanites began to fall upon them, and began to slay them with the sword.
22
Andthus without meeting any resistance, they did slay a thousand and five of them; and we know that they are blessed, for they have gone to dwell with their God.
• • •
30
Andthus we can plainly discern, that after a people have been once enlightened by the Spirit of God, and have had great knowledge of things pertaining to righteousness, and then have fallen away into sin and transgression, they become more hardened, andthus their state becomes worse than though they had never known these things.
6
For many of them, after having suffered much loss and so many afflictions, began to be stirred up in remembrance of the words which Aaron and his brethren had preached to them in their land; therefore they began to disbelieve the traditions of their fathers, and to believe in the Lord, and that he gave great power unto the Nephites; andthus there were many of them converted in the wilderness.
• • •
16
Now they did not suppose that salvation came by the law of Moses; but
the law of Moses did serve to strengthen their faith in Christ; andthus
they did retain a hope through faith, unto eternal salvation, relying
upon the spirit of prophecy, which spake of those things to come.
2
Andthus there was a
tremendous battle; yea, even such an one as never had been known among
all the people in the land from the time Lehi left Jerusalem; yea, and tens of thousands of the Lamanites were slain and scattered abroad.
• • •
5
Yea, the cry of widows mourning for their husbands, and also of fathers mourning for their sons, and the daughter for the brother, yea, the brother for the father; andthus the cry of mourning was heard among all of them, mourning for their kindred who had been slain.
• • •
7
Andthus endeth the fifteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi;
• • •
13
Andthus we see how great the inequality of man is because of sin and transgression, and the power of the devil, which comes by the cunning plans which he hath devised to ensnare the hearts of men.
14
Andthus we see the great call of diligence of men to labor in the vineyards of the Lord; andthus we see the great reason of sorrow, and also of rejoicing—sorrow because of death and destruction among men, and joy because of the light of Christ unto life.
4
Andthus the people did have no disturbance in all the sixteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
• • •
18
Andthus he did
preach unto them, leading away the hearts of many, causing them to lift
up their heads in their wickedness, yea, leading away many women, and also men, to commit whoredoms—telling them that when a man was dead, that was the end thereof.
• • •
27
Andthus ye lead away this people after the foolish traditions of your fathers, and according to your own desires; and
ye keep them down, even as it were in bondage, that ye may glut
yourselves with the labors of their hands, that they durst not look up
with boldness, and that they durst not enjoy their rights and privileges.
• • •
60
Andthus we see the end of him who perverteth the ways of the Lord; andthus we see that the devil will not support his children at the last day, but doth speedily drag them down to hell.
40
Andthus, if ye will
not nourish the word, looking forward with an eye of faith to the fruit
thereof, ye can never pluck of the fruit of the tree of life.
15
Andthus he shall
bring salvation to all those who shall believe on his name; this being
the intent of this last sacrifice, to bring about the bowels of mercy,
which overpowereth justice, and bringeth about means unto men that they may have faith unto repentance.
16
Andthus mercy can satisfy the demands of justice, and
encircles them in the arms of safety, while he that exercises no faith
unto repentance is exposed to the whole law of the demands of justice;
therefore only unto him that has faith unto repentance is brought about
the great and eternal plan of redemption.
11
Andthus the Zoramites and the Lamanites began to make preparations for war against the people of Ammon, and also against the Nephites.
12
Andthus ended the seventeenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
13
And the people of Ammon departed out of the land of Jershon, and came over into the land of Melek, and gave place in the land of Jershon for the armies of the Nephites, that they might contend with the armies of the Lamanites and the armies of the Zoramites; andthus commenced a war betwixt the Lamanites and the Nephites, in the eighteenth year of the reign of the judges; and an account shall be given of their wars hereafter.
26
And now, my son, we see that they did not repent; therefore they have been destroyed, andthus far the word of God has been fulfilled; yea, their secret abominations have been brought out of darkness and made known unto us.
• • •
30
For behold, they murdered all the prophets of the Lord who came among them to declare unto them concerning their iniquities; and the blood of those whom they murdered did cry unto the Lord their God for vengeance upon those who were their murderers; andthus the judgments of God did come upon these workers of darkness and secret combinations.
7
These are they that are redeemed of the Lord; yea, these are they that
are taken out, that are delivered from that endless night of darkness; andthus they stand or fall; for behold, they are their own judges, whether to do good or do evil.
4
Andthus we see, that there was a time granted unto man to repent, yea, a probationary time, a time to repent and serve God.
• • •
7
And now, ye see by this that our first parents were cut off both temporally and spiritually from the presence of the Lord; andthus we see they became subjects to follow after their own will.
• • •
14
Andthus we see that all mankind were fallen, and they were in the grasp of justice; yea, the justice of God, which consigned them forever to be cut off from his presence.
• • •
23
But God ceaseth not to be God, and mercy claimeth the penitent, and mercy cometh because of the atonement; and the atonement bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead; and the resurrection of the dead bringeth back men into the presence of God; andthus they are restored into his presence, to be judged according to their works, according to the law and justice.
24
For behold, justice exerciseth all his demands, and also mercy claimeth all which is her own; andthus, none but the truly penitent are saved.
• • •
26
Andthus God bringeth about his great and eternal purposes, which were prepared from the foundation of the world. Andthus cometh about the salvation and the redemption of men, and also their destruction and misery.
13
And the people of Ammon did give unto the Nephites a large portion of their substance to support their armies; andthus the Nephites were compelled, alone, to withstand against the Lamanites, who were a compound of Laman and Lemuel, and the sons of Ishmael, and all those who had dissented from the Nephites, who were Amalekites and Zoramites, and the descendants of the priests of Noah.
14
Now those descendants were as numerous, nearly, as were the Nephites; andthus the Nephites were obliged to contend with their brethren, even unto bloodshed.
• • •
33
Andthus having placed his army according to his desire, he was prepared to meet them.
• • •
38
While on the other hand, there was now and then a man fell among the Nephites, by their swords and
the loss of blood, they being shielded from the more vital parts of the
body, or the more vital parts of the body being shielded from the
strokes of the Lamanites, by their breastplates, and their armshields, and their head-plates; andthus the Nephites did carry on the work of death among the Lamanites.
• • •
44
And they were inspired by the Zoramites and the Amalekites, who were their chief captains and leaders, and by Zerahemnah, who was their chief captain, or their chief leader and commander; yea, they did fight like dragons, and many of the Nephites were slain by their hands, yea, for they did smite in two many of their head-plates, and they did pierce many of their breastplates, and they did smite off many of their arms; andthus the Lamanites did smite in their fierce anger.
24
Andthus ended the eighteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. Andthus ended the record of Alma, which was written upon the plates of Nephi.
7
And there were many in the church who believed
in the flattering words of Amalickiah, therefore they dissented even
from the church; andthus were the affairs of the people of Nephi exceedingly precarious and dangerous, notwithstanding their great victory which they had had over the Lamanites, and their great rejoicings which they had had because of their deliverance by the hand of the Lord.
• • •
36
And it came to pass also, that he caused the
title of liberty to be hoisted upon every tower which was in all the
land, which was possessed by the Nephites; andthus Moroni planted the standard of liberty among the Nephites.
37
And they began to have peace again in the land; andthus they did maintain peace in the land until nearly the end of the nineteenth year of the reign of the judges.
30
And the army which pursued after them returned, having pursued after them in vain; andthus Amalickiah, by his fraud, gained the hearts of the people.
• • •
34
And it came to pass that Amalickiah took the same servant that slew the king, and all them who were with him, and went in unto the queen, unto the place where she sat; and they all testified unto her that the king was slain by his own servants; and they said also: They have fled; does not this testify against them? Andthus they satisfied the queen concerning the death of the king.
35
And it came to pass that Amalickiah sought the favor of the queen, and took her unto him to wife; andthus by his fraud, and
by the assistance of his cunning servants, he obtained the kingdom;
yea, he was acknowledged king throughout all the land, among all the
people of the Lamanites, who were composed of the Lamanites and the Lemuelites and the Ishmaelites, and all the dissenters of the Nephites, from the reign of Nephi down to the present time.
2
Andthus he did inspire their hearts against the Nephites, insomuch that in the latter end of the nineteenth year of the reign of the judges, he having accomplished his designs thus far, yea, having been made king over the Lamanites, he sought also to reign over all the land, yea, and all the people who were in the land, the Nephites as well as the Lamanites.
• • •
5
Andthus he did appoint chief captains of the Zoramites, they being the most acquainted with the strength of the Nephites, and their places of resort, and the weakest parts of their cities; therefore he appointed them to be chief captains over his armies.
• • •
9
And in their weakest fortifications he did place the greater number of men; andthus he did fortify and strengthen the land which was possessed by the Nephites.
10
Andthus he was preparing to support their liberty, their lands, their wives, and their children, and their peace, and that they might live unto the Lord their God, and that they might maintain that which was called by their enemies the cause of Christians.
• • •
20
Andthus they went forth, and the people did humble themselves because of their words, insomuch that they were highly favored of the Lord, andthus they were free from wars and contentions among themselves, yea, even for the space of four years.
7
And being thus prepared they supposed that they should easily overpower and subject their brethren to the yoke of bondage, or slay and massacre them according to their pleasure.
• • •
15
And now, behold, this was wisdom in Moroni; for he had supposed that they would be frightened at the city Ammonihah; and as the city of Noah had hitherto been the weakest part of the land, therefore they would march thither to battle; andthus it was according to his desires.
• • •
19
Andthus were the
Nephites prepared to destroy all such as should attempt to climb up to
enter the fort by any other way, by casting over stones and arrows at them.
20
Thus they were prepared, yea, a body of their strongest men, with their swords and their slings, to smite down all who should attempt to come into their place of security by the place of entrance; andthus were they prepared to defend themselves against the Lamanites.
• • •
23
Thus the Nephites had all power over their enemies; andthus the Lamanites did attempt to destroy the Nephites until their chief captains were all slain; yea, and
more than a thousand of the Lamanites were slain; while, on the other
hand, there was not a single soul of the Nephites which was slain.
• • •
29
Andthus ended the nineteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
11
Andthus he cut off all the strongholds of the Lamanites in the east wilderness, yea, and also on the west, fortifying the line between the Nephites and the Lamanites, between the land of Zarahemla and
the land of Nephi, from the west sea, running by the head of the river
Sidon—the Nephites possessing all the land northward, yea, even all the
land which was northward of the land Bountiful, according to their
pleasure.
• • •
16
Andthus ended the twentieth year.
• • •
19
Andthus we see how merciful and
just are all the dealings of the Lord, to the fulfilling of all his
words unto the children of men; yea, we can behold that his words are
verified, even at this time, which he spake unto Lehi, saying:
• • •
32
Now behold, the people who were in the land Bountiful, or rather Moroni,
feared that they would hearken to the words of Morianton and unite with his people, andthus
he would obtain possession of those parts of the land, which would lay a
foundation for serious consequences among the people of Nephi, yea,
which consequences would lead to the overthrow of their liberty.
• • •
35
And it came to pass that the army which was
sent by Moroni, which was led by a man whose name was Teancum, did meet
the people of Morianton; and so stubborn were the people of Morianton, (being inspired by his wickedness and his flattering words) that a battle commenced between them, in the which Teancum did slay Morianton and defeat his army, and took them prisoners, and returned to the camp of Moroni. Andthus ended the twenty and fourth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
36
Andthus were the people of Morianton brought back. And upon their covenanting to keep the peace they were restored to the land of Morianton, and a union took place between them and the people of Lehi; and they were also restored to their lands.
6
And those who were desirous that Pahoran should remain chief judge over the land took upon them the name of freemen; andthus was the division among them, for the freemen had sworn or covenanted to maintain their rights and the privileges of their religion by a free government.
• • •
21
Andthus Moroni put an end to those king-men, that there were not any known by the appellation of king-men; andthus he put an end to the stubbornness and
the pride of those people who professed the blood of nobility; but they
were brought down to humble themselves like unto their brethren, and to fight valiantly for their freedom from bondage.
• • •
26
Andthus he went on, taking possession of many cities, the city of Nephihah, and the city of Lehi, and the city of Morianton, and the city of Omner, and the city of Gid, and the city of Mulek, all of which were on the east borders by the seashore.
27
Andthus had the
Lamanites obtained, by the cunning of Amalickiah, so many cities, by
their numberless hosts, all of which were strongly fortified after the
manner of the fortifications of Moroni; all of which afforded
strongholds for the Lamanites.
• • •
37
Andthus endeth the twenty and fifth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi; andthus endeth the days of Amalickiah.
13
Andthus he was endeavoring to harass the Nephites, and
to draw away a part of their forces to that part of the land, while he
had commanded those whom he had left to possess the cities which he had
taken, that they should also harass the Nephites on the borders by the
east sea, and should take possession of their lands as much as it was in their power, according to the power of their armies.
14
Andthus were the Nephites in those dangerous circumstances in the ending of the twenty and sixth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
• • •
22
Therefore he caused that Teancum should take a small number of men and march down near the seashore; and Moroni and his army, by night, marched in the wilderness, on the west of the city Mulek; andthus, on the morrow, when the guards of the Lamanites had discovered Teancum, they ran and told it unto Jacob, their leader.
• • •
25
Andthus they did, and slew all those who had been left to protect the city, yea, all those who would not yield up their weapons of war.
26
Andthus Moroni had
obtained possession of the city Mulek with a part of his army, while he
marched with the remainder to meet the Lamanites when they should return
from the pursuit of Teancum.
4
And he caused that they should build a breastwork of timbers upon the inner bank of the ditch; and they cast up dirt out of the ditch against the breastwork of timbers; andthus they did cause the Lamanites to labor until they had encircled the city of Bountiful round about with a strong wall of timbers and earth, to an exceeding height.
• • •
6
And it came to pass that Moroni had thus gained a victory over one of the greatest of the armies of the Lamanites, and had obtained possession of the city of Mulek, which was one of the strongest holds of the Lamanites in the land of Nephi; andthus he had also built a stronghold to retain his prisoners.
• • •
9
Andthus because of iniquity amongst themselves, yea, because of dissensions and intrigue among themselves they were placed in the most dangerous circumstances.
• • •
23
Andthus ended the twenty and eighth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
23
Andthus they saw that the Nephites had power over them; and
in these circumstances they found that it was not expedient that they
should fight with the Nephites; therefore their chief captains demanded
their weapons of war, and they brought them forth and cast them at the feet of the Nephites, pleading for mercy.
• • •
32
And they were thus
cautious that no poison should be administered among them; for if their
wine would poison a Lamanite it would also poison a Nephite; andthus they did try all their liquors.
• • •
35
Andthus ended the twenty and ninth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
16
Yea, and they were depressed in body as well as in spirit, for they had fought valiantly by day and toiled by night to maintain their cities; andthus they had suffered great afflictions of every kind.
• • •
19
Andthus were we
favored of the Lord; for had they come upon us in this our weakness they
might have perhaps destroyed our little army; but thus were we preserved.
20
They were commanded by Ammoron to maintain those cities which they had taken. Andthus ended the twenty and sixth year. And in the commencement of the twenty and seventh year we had prepared our city and ourselves for defence.
• • •
23
For we knew in those cities they were not sufficiently strong to meet
them; therefore we were desirous, if they should pass by us, to fall
upon them in their rear, andthus
bring them up in the rear at the same time they were met in the front.
We supposed that we could overpower them; but behold, we were
disappointed in this our desire.
• • •
26
Andthus, with their forces, they were determined to maintain those cities which they had taken.
• • •
28
And also there were sent two thousand men unto us from the land of Zarahemla. Andthus we were prepared with ten thousand men, and provisions for them, and also for their wives and their children.
• • •
36
And it came to pass that we did flee before them, northward. Andthus we did lead away the most powerful army of the Lamanites;
• • •
40
Now they durst not turn to the right nor to the left lest they should be
surrounded; neither would I turn to the right nor to the left lest they
should overtake me, and we could not stand against them, but be slain, and they would make their escape; andthus we did flee all that day into the wilderness, even until it was dark.
• • •
52
And it came to pass that the Lamanites took courage, and began to pursue them; andthus were the Lamanites pursuing them with great vigor when Helaman came upon their rear with his two thousand, and began to slay them exceedingly, insomuch that the whole army of the Lamanites halted and turned upon Helaman.
4
But the people of Antiparah did leave the city, and fled to their other cities, which they had possession of, to fortify them; andthus the city of Antiparah fell into our hands.
5
Andthus ended the twenty and eighth year of the reign of the judges.
• • •
12
And it came to pass that not many days had
passed away before the Lamanites began to lose all hopes of succor;
therefore they yielded up the city unto our hands; andthus we had accomplished our designs in obtaining the city Cumeni.
5
But behold, this did profit us but little; for the Lamanites were also receiving great strength from day to day, and also many provisions; andthus were our circumstances at this period of time.
• • •
13
Andthus we did go forth with all our might against the Lamanites, who were in the city of Manti; and we did pitch our tents by the wilderness side, which was near to the city.
• • •
28
Andthus it came to pass, that by this stratagem we did take possession of the city of Manti without the shedding of blood.
7
Andthus being exceedingly numerous, yea, and receiving strength from day to day, by the command of Ammoron they came forth against the people of Nephihah, and they did begin to slay them with an exceedingly great slaughter.
36
Behold, I am Moroni, your chief captain. I seek not for power, but to
pull it down. I seek not for honor of the world, but for the glory of
my God, and the freedom and welfare of my country. Andthus I close mine epistle.
6
Andthus, when Moroni had gathered together whatsoever men he could in all his march, he came to the land of Gideon; and
uniting his forces with those of Pahoran they became exceedingly
strong, even stronger than the men of Pachus, who was the king of those
dissenters who had driven the freemen out of the land of Zarahemla and had taken possession of the land.
• • •
10
Andthus it became expedient that this law should be strictly observed for the safety of their country; yea, and whosoever was found denying their freedom was speedily executed according to the law.
11
Andthus ended the thirtieth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi; Moroni and
Pahoran having restored peace to the land of Zarahemla, among their own
people, having inflicted death upon all those who were not true to the
cause of freedom.
• • •
29
Therefore, all the prisoners of the Lamanites did join the people of Ammon, and did begin to labor exceedingly, tilling the ground, raising all manner of grain, and flocks and herds of every kind; andthus were the Nephites relieved from a great burden; yea, insomuch that they were relieved from all the prisoners of the Lamanites.
• • •
35
Andthus they did encamp for the night. For behold, the Nephites and
the Lamanites also were weary because of the greatness of the march;
therefore they did not resolve upon any stratagem in the night-time,
save it were Teancum; for he was exceedingly angry with Ammoron,
insomuch that he considered that Ammoron, and Amalickiah his brother, had been the cause of this great and lasting war between them and the Lamanites, which had been the cause of so much war and bloodshed, yea, and so much famine.
• • •
39
Andthus ended the thirty and first year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi; andthus they had had wars, and bloodsheds, and famine, and affliction, for the space of many years.
3
And it came to pass that Moroni died also. Andthus ended the thirty and sixth year of the reign of the judges.
• • •
6
And behold, there were many of the Nephites who did enter therein and did sail forth with much provisions, and also many women and children; and they took their course northward. Andthus ended the thirty and seventh year.
• • •
9
And it came to pass that in this year there were many people who went forth into the land northward. Andthus ended the thirty and eighth year.
• • •
16
Andthus ended the thirty and ninth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
17
Andthus ended the account of Alma, and Helaman his son, and also Shiblon, who was his son.
21
And it came to pass that Pacumeni, who was the chief judge, did flee before Coriantumr, even to the walls of the city. And it came to pass that Coriantumr did smite him against the wall, insomuch that he died. Andthus ended the days of Pacumeni.
• • •
29
Andthus he did; and he did head them before they came to the land Bountiful, and gave unto them battle, insomuch that they began to retreat back towards the land of Zarahemla.
• • •
32
Andthus had Coriantumr plunged the Lamanites into the midst of the Nephites, insomuch that they were in the power of the Nephites, and he himself was slain, and the Lamanites did yield themselves into the hands of the Nephites.
• • •
34
Andthus ended the forty and first year of the reign of the judges.
11
But behold, when Gadianton had found that Kishkumen did not return he
feared lest that he should be destroyed; therefore he caused that his
band should follow him. And they took their flight out of the land, by a secret way, into the wilderness; andthus when Helaman sent forth to take them they could nowhere be found.
12
And more of this Gadianton shall be spoken hereafter. Andthus ended the forty and second year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
8
Andthus those
dissenters of the Nephites, with the help of a numerous army of the
Lamanites, had obtained all the possession of the Nephites which was in
the land southward. And all this was done in the fifty and eighth and ninth years of the reign of the judges.
• • •
17
Andthus ended the sixty and first year of the reign of the judges.
• • •
26
For behold, they saw that the strength of the Lamanites was as great as their strength, even man for man. Andthus had they fallen into this great transgression; yea, thus had they become weak, because of their transgression, in the space of not many years.
6
And it came to pass that many of the Lamanites did go into the land northward; and also Nephi and Lehi went into the land northward, to preach unto the people. Andthus ended the sixty and third year.
• • •
8
And it came to pass that the Lamanites did
also go whithersoever they would, whether it were among the Lamanites or
among the Nephites; andthus they did have free intercourse one with another, to buy and to sell, and to get gain, according to their desire.
• • •
11
And behold, there was all manner of gold in both these lands, and of silver, and of precious ore of every kind; and there were also curious workmen, who did work all kinds of ore and did refine it; andthus they did become rich.
• • •
13
Behold their women did toil and spin, and did make all manner of cloth, of fine-twined linen and cloth of every kind, to clothe their nakedness. Andthus the sixty and fourth year did pass away in peace.
14
And in the sixty and fifth year they did also have great joy and peace, yea, much preaching and many prophecies concerning that which was to come. Andthus passed away the sixty and fifth year.
15
And it came to pass that in the sixty and sixth year of the reign of the judges, behold, Cezoram was murdered by an unknown hand as he sat upon the judgment-seat. And it came to pass that in the same year, that his son, who had been appointed by the people in his stead, was also murdered. Andthus ended the sixty and sixth year.
• • •
23
Andthus they might murder, and plunder, and steal, and commit whoredoms and all manner of wickedness, contrary to the laws of their country and also the laws of their God.
• • •
34
Andthus we see that the Nephites did begin to dwindle in unbelief, and grow in wickedness and
abominations, while the Lamanites began to grow exceedingly in the
knowledge of their God; yea, they did begin to keep his statutes and commandments, and to walk in truth and uprightness before him.
35
Andthus we see that the Spirit of the Lord began to withdraw from the Nephites, because of the wickedness and the hardness of their hearts.
36
Andthus we see that the Lord began to pour out his Spirit upon the Lamanites, because of their easiness and willingness to believe in his words.
• • •
39
Andthus they did obtain the sole management of the government, insomuch that they did trample under their feet and smite and rend and turn their backs upon the poor and the meek, and the humble followers of God.
40
Andthus we see that they were in an awful state, and ripening for an everlasting destruction.
7
Behold, I give unto you power, that whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven; andthus shall ye have power among this people.
8
Andthus, if ye shall say unto this temple it shall be rent in twain, it shall be done.
• • •
19
Andthus ended the seventy and first year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
5
And so it was done, according to the words of Nephi. And there was a great famine upon the land, among all the people of Nephi. Andthus in the seventy and fourth year the famine did continue, and the work of destruction did cease by the sword but became sore by famine.
• • •
20
Andthus it did come to pass that the people of Nephi began to prosper again in the land, and began to build up their waste places, and began to multiply and spread, even until they did cover the whole face of the land, both on the northward and on the southward, from the sea west to the sea east.
21
And it came to pass that the seventy and sixth year did end in peace. And the seventy and seventh year began in peace; and the church did spread throughout the face of all the land; and the more part of the people, both the Nephites and the Lamanites, did belong to the church; and they did have exceedingly great peace in the land; andthus ended the seventy and seventh year.
• • •
26
Andthus in time, yea, even in the space of not many years, they became an exceedingly great band of robbers; and they did search out all the secret plans of Gadianton; andthus they became robbers of Gadianton.
• • •
29
But behold, it came to pass that in that same year they were driven back even into their own lands. Andthus ended the eightieth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
• • •
35
Andthus ended the eighty and first year of the reign of the judges.
• • •
37
And it came to pass in the eighty and fifth year they did wax stronger and stronger in their pride, and in their wickedness; andthus they were ripening again for destruction.
1 Andthus we can behold how false, and
also the unsteadiness of the hearts of the children of men; yea, we can
see that the Lord in his great infinite goodness doth bless and prosper those who put their trust in him.
• • •
3
Andthus we see that except the Lord doth chasten his people with many afflictions, yea, except he doth visit them with death and with terror, and with famine and with all manner of pestilence, they will not remember him.
• • •
15
Andthus, according to his word the earth goeth back, and it appeareth unto man that the sun standeth still; yea, and behold, this is so; for surely it is the earth that moveth and not the sun.
• • •
26
Yea, who shall be consigned to a state of endless misery, fulfilling the
words which say: They that have done good shall have everlasting life; and they that have done evil shall have everlasting damnation. Andthus it is. Amen.
9
And behold, thus hath the Lord commanded me, by his angel, that I should come and
tell this thing unto you; yea, he hath commanded that I should prophesy
these things unto you; yea, he hath said unto me: Cry unto this people,
repent and prepare the way of the Lord.
• • •
26
And behold, thus hath the angel spoken unto me; for he said unto me that there should be thunderings and lightnings for the space of many hours.
8
And behold, he was never heard of more among the Nephites; andthus were the affairs of the people.
9
Andthus ended the eighty and sixth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
10
Andthus ended also the eighty and seventh year of the reign of the judges, the more part of the people remaining in their pride and wickedness, and the lesser part walking more circumspectly before God.
• • •
21
And they will, by the cunning and
the mysterious arts of the evil one, work some great mystery which we
cannot understand, which will keep us down to be servants to their
words, and also servants unto them, for we depend upon them to teach us the word; andthus will they keep us in ignorance if we will yield ourselves unto them, all the days of our lives.
• • •
24
Andthus ended the ninetieth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
25
Andthus ended the book of Helaman, according to the record of Helaman and his sons.
23
And it came to pass that Nephi went forth among the people, and also many others, baptizing unto repentance, in the which there was a great remission of sins. Andthus the people began again to have peace in the land.
• • •
26
Andthus the ninety and
second year did pass away, bringing glad tidings unto the people
because of the signs which did come to pass, according to the words of
the prophecy of all the holy prophets.
• • •
30
Andthus were the Lamanites afflicted also, and began to decrease as to their faith and righteousness, because of the wickedness of the rising generation.
2
Imagining up some vain thing in their hearts, that it was wrought by men and by the power of the devil, to lead away and deceive the hearts of the people; andthus did Satan get possession of the hearts of the people again, insomuch that he did blind their eyes and lead them away to believe that the doctrine of Christ was a foolish and a vain thing.
• • •
4
Andthus did pass away the ninety and sixth year; and also the ninety and seventh year; and also the ninety and eighth year; and also the ninety and ninth year;
• • •
10
And it came to pass that the people did still remain in wickedness, notwithstanding the much preaching and prophesying which was sent among them; andthus passed away the tenth year also; and the eleventh year also passed away in iniquity.
• • •
16
And their young men and their daughters became exceedingly fair, and they were numbered among the Nephites, and were called Nephites. Andthus ended the thirteenth year.
• • •
18
Andthus ended the fourteenth year. And in the fifteenth year they did come forth against the people of Nephi; and because of the wickedness of the people of Nephi, and their many contentions and dissensions, the Gadianton robbers did gain many advantages over them.
19
Andthus ended the fifteenth year, andthus were the people in a state of many afflictions; and the sword of destruction did hang over them, insomuch that they were about to be smitten down by it, and this because of their iniquity.
4
Therefore, there was no chance for the robbers to plunder and to obtain food, save it were to come up in open battle against the Nephites; and the Nephites being in one body, and having so great a number, and having reserved for themselves provisions, and horses and cattle, and
flocks of every kind, that they might subsist for the space of seven
years, in the which time they did hope to destroy the robbers from off
the face of the land; andthus the eighteenth year did pass away.
• • •
13
And it came to pass that Gidgiddoni commanded that his armies should pursue them as far as the borders of the wilderness, and that they should not spare any that should fall into their hands by the way; andthus they did pursue them and did slay them, to the borders of the wilderness, even until they had fulfilled the commandment of Gidgiddoni.
14
And it came to pass that Giddianhi, who had stood and fought with boldness, was pursued as he fled; and being weary because of his much fighting he was overtaken and slain. Andthus was the end of Giddianhi the robber.
• • •
22
Andthus it became
the desire of the people of Zemnarihah to withdraw from their design,
because of the great destruction which came upon them by night and by day.
6
Andthus they did put an end to all those wicked, and secret, and abominable combinations, in the which there was so much wickedness, and so many murders committed.
7
Andthus had the twenty and second year passed away, and the twenty and third year also, and the twenty and fourth, and the twenty and fifth; andthus had twenty and five years passed away.
3
And they granted unto those robbers who had
entered into a covenant to keep the peace of the land, who were desirous
to remain Lamanites, lands, according to their numbers, that they might
have, with their labors, wherewith to subsist upon; andthus they did establish peace in all the land.
• • •
9
Andthus passed away the twenty and eighth year, and the people had continual peace.
• • •
14
Andthus there became a great inequality in all the land, insomuch that the church began to be broken up; yea, insomuch that in the thirtieth
year the church was broken up in all the land save it were among a few
of the Lamanites who were converted unto the true faith; and they would not depart from it, for they were firm, and steadfast, and immovable, willing with all diligence to keep the commandments of the Lord.
• • •
16
Andthus Satan did lead away the hearts of the people to do all manner of iniquity; therefore they had enjoyed peace but a few years.
17
Andthus, in the
commencement of the thirtieth year—the people having been delivered up
for the space of a long time to be carried about by the temptations of
the devil whithersoever he desired to carry them, and to do whatsoever iniquity he desired they should—andthus in the commencement of this, the thirtieth year, they were in a state of awful wickedness.
2
And the people were divided one against another; and they did separate one from another into tribes, every man according to his family and his kindred and friends; andthus they did destroy the government of the land.
3
And every tribe did appoint a chief or a leader over them; andthus they became tribes and leaders of tribes.
• • •
8
Andthus six years
had not passed away since the more part of the people had turned from
their righteousness, like the dog to his vomit, or like the sow to her
wallowing in the mire.
• • •
13
And so speedy was their march that it could not be impeded until they had gone forth out of the reach of the people. Andthus ended the thirtieth year; andthus were the affairs of the people of Nephi.
• • •
26
And there were many in the commencement of this year that were baptized unto repentance; andthus the more part of the year did pass away.
17
Andthus the face of the whole earth became deformed, because of the tempests, and the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the quaking of the earth.
• • •
25
And in another place they were heard to cry and mourn, saying: O that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and had not killed and stoned the prophets, and cast them out; then would our mothers and our fair daughters, and our children have been spared, and not have been buried up in that great city Moronihah. Andthus were the howlings of the people great and terrible.
36
Andthus will the Father bear record of me, and the Holy Ghost will bear record unto him of the Father and me; for the Father, and I, and the Holy Ghost are one.
10
Andthus commandeth the Father that I should say unto you: At that day when the Gentiles shall sin against my gospel, and shall reject the fulness of my gospel, and shall be lifted up in the pride of their hearts above all nations, and above all the people of the whole earth, and shall be filled with all manner of lyings, and of deceits, and of mischiefs, and all manner of hypocrisy, and murders, and priestcrafts, and whoredoms, and of secret abominations; and if they shall do all those things, and shall reject the fulness of my gospel, behold, saith the Father, I will bring the fulness of my gospel from among them.
23
And it came to pass that thus they did go forth among all the people of Nephi, and did preach the gospel of Christ unto all people upon the face of the land; and they were converted unto the Lord, and were united unto the church of Christ, andthus the people of that generation were blessed, according to the word of Jesus.
6
Andthus did the thirty and eighth year pass away, and also the thirty and ninth, and forty and first, and the forty and second, yea, even until forty and nine years had passed away, and also the fifty and first, and the fifty and second; yea, and even until fifty and nine years had passed away.
• • •
34
Nevertheless, the people did harden their hearts, for they were led by many priests and false prophets to build up many churches, and to do all manner of iniquity. And they did smite upon the people of Jesus; but the people of Jesus did not smite again. Andthus they did dwindle in unbelief and wickedness, from year to year, even until two hundred and thirty years had passed away.
• • •
40
And it came to pass that two hundred and forty and four years had passed away, andthus were the affairs of the people. And the more wicked part of the people did wax strong, and became exceedingly more numerous than were the people of God.
41
And they did still continue to build up churches unto themselves, and adorn them with all manner of precious things. Andthus did two hundred and fifty years pass away, and also two hundred and sixty years.
• • •
49
And he did hide them up unto the Lord, that
they might come again unto the remnant of the house of Jacob, according
to the prophecies and the promises of the Lord. Andthus is the end of the record of Ammaron.
15
And it came to pass that my sorrow did return unto me again, and I saw that the day of grace was passed with them, both temporally and spiritually; for I saw thousands of them hewn down in open rebellion against their God, and heaped up as dung upon the face of the land. Andthus three hundred and forty and four years had passed away.
5
But it came to pass that whatsoever lands we had passed by, and the inhabitants thereof were not gathered in, were destroyed by the Lamanites, and their towns, and villages, and cities were burned with fire; andthus three hundred and seventy and nine years passed away.
43
And there will I bless thee and thy seed, and raise up unto me of thy seed, and of the seed of thy brother, and they who shall go with thee, a great nation. And there shall be none greater than the nation which I will raise up unto me of thy seed, upon all the face of the earth. Andthus I will do unto thee because this long time ye have cried unto me.
3
And they did also carry with them deseret, which, by interpretation, is a honey bee; andthus they did carry with them swarms of bees, and all manner of that which was upon the face of the land, seeds of every kind.
3
Andthus the Lord caused stones to shine in darkness, to give light unto men, women, and children, that they might not cross the great waters in darkness.
• • •
5
And it came to pass that the Lord God caused
that there should be a furious wind blow upon the face of the waters,
towards the promised land; andthus they were tossed upon the waves of the sea before the wind.
• • •
8
And it came to pass that the wind did never cease to blow towards the promised land while they were upon the waters; andthus they were driven forth before the wind.
• • •
10
Andthus they were driven forth; and no monster of the sea could break them, neither whale that could mar them; and they did have light continually, whether it was above the water or under the water.
11
Andthus they were driven forth, three hundred and forty and four days upon the water.
20
Andthus the Lord did pour out his blessings upon this land, which was choice above all other lands; and
he commanded that whoso should possess the land should possess it unto
the Lord, or they should be destroyed when they were ripened in
iniquity; for upon such, saith the Lord: I will pour out the fulness of
my wrath.
25
Andthus we see that the Lord did visit them in the fulness of his wrath, and their wickedness and abominations had prepared a way for their everlasting destruction.
25
Wherefore, by the ministering of angels, and by every word which proceeded forth out of the mouth of God, men began to exercise faith in Christ; andthus by faith, they did lay hold upon every good thing; andthus it was until the coming of Christ.
23
Andthus he has laid a cunning plan, thinking to destroy the work of God; but I will require this at their hands, and it shall turn to their shame and condemnation in the day of judgment.
• • •
25
Yea, he saith unto them: Deceive and lie in wait to catch, that ye may destroy; behold, this is no harm. Andthus he flattereth them, and telleth them that it is no sin to lie that they may catch a man in a lie, that they may destroy him.
26
Andthus he flattereth them, and leadeth them along until he draggeth their souls down to hell; andthus he causeth them to catch themselves in their own snare.
27
Andthus he goeth up and down, to and fro in the earth, seeking to destroy the souls of men.
• • •
29
Now, behold, they have altered these words, because Satan saith unto them: He hath deceived you—andthus he flattereth them away to do iniquity, to get thee to tempt the Lord thy God.
• • •
42
And behold, you shall publish it as the record of Nephi; andthus I will confound those who have altered my words.
• • •
50
Andthus they did
leave a blessing upon this land in their prayers, that whosoever should
believe in this gospel in this land might have eternal life;
12
And the first preacher of this church unto the church, and before the world, yea, before the Gentiles; yea, andthus saith the Lord God, lo, lo! to the Jews also. Amen.
37
And they were thrust down, andthus came the devil and his angels;
• • •
43
Andthus did I, the
Lord God, appoint unto man the days of his probation—that by his natural
death he might be raised in immortality unto eternal life, even as many
as would believe;
9
Andthus ye shall become instructed in the law of my church, and be sanctified by that which ye have received, and ye shall bind yourselves to act in all holiness before me—
10
Let them go two by two, andthus let them preach by the way in every congregation, baptizing by water, and the laying on of the hands by the water’s side.
• • •
42
Andthus, even as I
have said, if ye are faithful ye shall assemble yourselves together to
rejoice upon the land of Missouri, which is the land of your
inheritance, which is now the land of your enemies.
3
Andthus saith the
Lord your God, if you will receive wisdom here is wisdom. Behold, the
place which is now called Independence is the center place; and a spot for the temple is lying westward, upon a lot which is not far from the courthouse.
• • •
10
Andthus provide for my saints, that my gospel may be preached unto those who sit in darkness and in the region and shadow of death.
• • •
14
Andthus let those
of whom I have spoken be planted in the land of Zion, as speedily as can
be, with their families, to do those things even as I have spoken.
89
Andthus we saw, in the heavenly vision, the glory of the telestial, which surpasses all understanding;
• • •
91
Andthus we saw the glory of the terrestrial which excels in all things the glory of the telestial, even in glory, and in power, and in might, and in dominion.
92
Andthus we saw the glory of the celestial, which excels in all things—where God, even the Father, reigns upon his throne forever and ever;
6
Andthus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations;
79
And the Presidency of the council of the High
Priesthood shall have power to call other high priests, even twelve, to
assist as counselors; andthus the Presidency of the High Priesthood and its counselors shall have power to decide upon testimony according to the laws of the church.
16
I was left thus, without being able to decide
whether this coming referred to the beginning of the millennium or to
some previous appearing, or whether I should die andthus see his face.
30
But behold, from among the righteous, he organized his forces and appointed messengers, clothed with power and authority, and commissioned them to go forth and carry the light of the gospel to them that were in darkness, even to all the spirits of men; andthus was the gospel preached to the dead.
55
Andthus the works of darkness began to prevail among all the sons of men.
• • •
58
Andthus the Gospel began to be preached, from the beginning, being declared by holy angels sent forth from the presence of God, and by his own voice, and by the gift of the Holy Ghost.
59
Andthus all things were confirmed unto Adam, by an holy ordinance, and the Gospel preached, and a decree sent forth, that it should be in the world, until the end thereof; andthus it was. Amen.

When this woman discovered the land it was under water, who afterward settled her sons in it; andthus, from Ham, sprang that race which preserved the curse in the land.
9
Andthus there shall
be the reckoning of the time of one planet above another, until thou
come nigh unto Kolob, which Kolob is after the reckoning of the Lord’s
time; which Kolob is set nigh unto the throne of God, to govern all
those planets which belong to the same order as that upon which thou
standest.
1 Andthus we will finish the heavens and the earth, and all the hosts of them.
• • •
3
And the Gods concluded upon the seventh time,
because that on the seventh time they would rest from all their works
which they (the Gods) counseled among themselves to form; and sanctified it. Andthus were their decisions at the time that they counseled among themselves to form the heavens and the earth.
55
Andthus cometh the
end of the wicked, according to the prophecy of Moses, saying: They
shall be cut off from among the people; but the end of the earth is not
yet, but by and by.
