4
And it came to pass that he departed
into the wilderness. And he left his house, and the land of his
inheritance, and his gold, and his silver, and his precious things, and
took nothing with him, saveit were his family, and provisions, and tents, and departed into the wilderness.
3
And that great pit, which hath been digged for them by that great and
abominable church, which was founded by the devil and his children, that
he might lead away the souls of men down to hell—yea, that great pit
which hath been digged for the destruction of men shall be filled by
those who digged it, unto their utter destruction, saith the Lamb of God; not the destruction of the soul, saveit be the casting of it into that hell which hath no end.
20
And thou art like unto our father, led away by the foolish imaginations
of his heart; yea, he hath led us out of the land of Jerusalem, and we
have wandered in the wilderness for these many years; and our women have
toiled, being big with child; and they have borne children in the
wilderness and suffered all things, saveit were death; and it would have been better that they had died before they came out of Jerusalem than to have suffered these afflictions.
• • •
31
And it came to pass that according to his word
he did destroy them; and according to his word he did lead them; and
according to his word he did do all things for them; and there was not
any thing done saveit were by his word.
20
And there was nothing saveit
were the power of God, which threatened them with destruction, could
soften their hearts; wherefore, when they saw that they were about to be
swallowed up in the depths of the sea they repented of the thing which
they had done, insomuch that they loosed me.
6
Nevertheless, I do not write anything upon plates saveit be that I think it
be sacred. And now, if I do err, even did they err of old; not that I
would excuse myself because of other men, but because of the weakness
which is in me, according to the flesh, I would excuse myself.
31
Wherefore, because thou hast been faithful thy seed shall be blessed
with his seed, that they dwell in prosperity long upon the face of this
land; and nothing, saveit shall be iniquity among them, shall harm or disturb their prosperity upon the face of this land forever.
8
Wherefore, how great the importance to make these things known unto the
inhabitants of the earth, that they may know that there is no flesh that
can dwell in the presence of God, saveit be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the Spirit, that he may bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, being the first that should rise.
• • •
16
Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself saveit should be that he was enticed by the one or the other.
• • •
26
And the Messiah cometh in the fulness of time, that he may redeem the
children of men from the fall. And because that they are redeemed from
the fall they have become free forever, knowing good from evil; to act
for themselves and not to be acted upon, saveit be by the punishment of the law at the great and last day, according to the commandments which God hath given.
• • •
30
I have spoken these few words unto you all, my sons, in the last days of
my probation; and I have chosen the good part, according to the words
of the prophet. And I have none other object saveit be the everlasting welfare of your souls. Amen.
16
And I, Nephi, did build a temple; and I did construct it after the manner of the temple of Solomon saveit were not built of so many precious things; for they were not to be found upon the land, wherefore, it
could not be built like unto Solomon’s temple. But the manner of the
construction was like unto the temple of Solomon; and the workmanship
thereof was exceedingly fine.
7
Wherefore, it must needs be an infinite atonement—saveit
should be an infinite atonement this corruption could not put on
incorruption. Wherefore, the first judgment which came upon man must
needs have remained to an endless duration. And if so, this flesh must
have laid down to rot and to crumble to its mother earth, to rise no
more.
• • •
13
O how great the plan of our God! For on the other hand, the paradise of
God must deliver up the spirits of the righteous, and the grave deliver
up the body of the righteous; and the spirit and the body is restored
to itself again, and all men become incorruptible, and immortal, and
they are living souls, having a perfect knowledge like unto us in the
flesh, saveit be that our knowledge shall be perfect.
• • •
41
O then, my beloved brethren, come unto the Lord, the Holy One. Remember
that his paths are righteous. Behold, the way for man is narrow, but it
lieth in a straight course before him, and the keeper of the gate is
the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there; and there is
none other way saveit be by the gate; for he cannot be deceived, for the Lord God is his name.
5
Yea, and my soul delighteth in the words of Isaiah, for I came out from
Jerusalem, and mine eyes hath beheld the things of the Jews, and I know
that the Jews do understand the things of the prophets, and there is
none other people that understand the things which were spoken unto the
Jews like unto them, saveit be that they are taught after the manner of the things of the Jews.
• • •
9
And as one generation hath been destroyed among the Jews because of
iniquity, even so have they been destroyed from generation to generation
according to their iniquities; and never hath any of them been
destroyed saveit were foretold them by the prophets of the Lord.
10
Wherefore, it hath been told them concerning
the destruction which should come upon them, immediately after my father
left Jerusalem; nevertheless, they hardened their hearts; and according
to my prophecy they have been destroyed, saveit be those which are carried away captive into Babylon.
• • •
18
Wherefore, he shall bring forth his words unto them, which words shall
judge them at the last day, for they shall be given them for the purpose
of convincing them of the true Messiah, who was rejected by them; and
unto the convincing of them that they need not look forward any more for
a Messiah to come, for there should not any come, saveit should be a false Messiah which should deceive the people; for there is save one Messiah spoken of by the prophets, and that Messiah is he who should be rejected of the Jews.
• • •
20
And now, my brethren, I have spoken plainly that ye cannot err. And as
the Lord God liveth that brought Israel up out of the land of Egypt, and
gave unto Moses power that he should heal the nations after they had
been bitten by the poisonous serpents, if they would cast their eyes
unto the serpent which he did raise up before them, and also gave him
power that he should smite the rock and the water should come forth;
yea, behold I say unto you, that as these things are true, and as the
Lord God liveth, there is none other name given under heaven saveit be this Jesus Christ, of which I have spoken, whereby man can be saved.
24
He doeth not anything saveit
be for the benefit of the world; for he loveth the world, even that he
layeth down his own life that he may draw all men unto him. Wherefore,
he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation.
• • •
33
For none of these iniquities come of the Lord; for he doeth that which is good among the children of men; and he doeth nothing saveit
be plain unto the children of men; and he inviteth them all to come
unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto
him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he
remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and
Gentile.
12
Wherefore, at that day when the book shall be delivered unto the man of
whom I have spoken, the book shall be hid from the eyes of the world,
that the eyes of none shall behold itsaveit be that three witnesses shall behold it,
by the power of God, besides him to whom the book shall be delivered;
and they shall testify to the truth of the book and the things therein.
13
And there is none other which shall view it, saveit
be a few according to the will of God, to bear testimony of his word
unto the children of men; for the Lord God hath said that the words of
the faithful should speak as if it were from the dead.
• • •
23
For behold, I am God; and I am a God of miracles; and I will show unto
the world that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever; and I work
not among the children of men saveit be according to their faith.
14
They wear stiff necks and high heads; yea, and because of pride, and
wickedness, and abominations, and whoredoms, they have all gone astray saveit
be a few, who are the humble followers of Christ; nevertheless, they
are led, that in many instances they do err because they are taught by
the precepts of men.
2
For behold, I say unto you that as many of the Gentiles as will repent
are the covenant people of the Lord; and as many of the Jews as will not
repent shall be cast off; for the Lord covenanteth with none saveit be with them that repent and believe in his Son, who is the Holy One of Israel.
• • •
17
There is nothing which is secret saveit shall be revealed; there is no work of darkness saveit shall be made manifest in the light; and there is nothing which is sealed upon the earth saveit shall be loosed.
2
Wherefore, the things which I have written sufficeth me, saveit
be a few words which I must speak concerning the doctrine of Christ;
wherefore, I shall speak unto you plainly, according to the plainness of
my prophesying.
• • •
19
And now, my beloved brethren, after ye have gotten into this strait and
narrow path, I would ask if all is done? Behold, I say unto you, Nay;
for ye have not come thus far saveit were by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.
2
Do ye not remember that I said unto you that after ye had received the
Holy Ghost ye could speak with the tongue of angels? And now, how could
ye speak with the tongue of angels saveit were by the Holy Ghost?
2
And he gave me, Jacob, a commandment that I should write upon these
plates a few of the things which I considered to be most precious; that I
should not touch, saveit were lightly, concerning the history of this people which are called the people of Nephi.
27
Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have saveit be one wife; and concubines he shall have none;
5
Behold, the Lamanites your brethren, whom ye hate because of their
filthiness and the cursing which hath come upon their skins, are more
righteous than you; for they have not forgotten the commandment of the
Lord, which was given unto our father—that they should have saveit were one wife, and concubines they should have none, and there should not be whoredoms committed among them.
2
But whatsoever things we write upon anything saveit
be upon plates must perish and vanish away; but we can write a few
words upon plates, which will give our children, and also our beloved
brethren, a small degree of knowledge concerning us, or concerning their
fathers—
• • •
8
Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord. How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find out all his ways. And no man knoweth of his ways saveit be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God.
42
Behold, I knew that all the fruit of the vineyard, saveit
were these, had become corrupted. And now these which have once
brought forth good fruit have also become corrupted; and now all the
trees of my vineyard are good for nothing saveit be to be hewn down and cast into the fire.
• • •
57
And the Lord of the vineyard said unto the servant: Pluck not the wild branches from the trees, saveit be those which are most bitter; and in them ye shall graft according to that which I have said.
10
And while I was thus struggling in the spirit, behold, the voice of the
Lord came into my mind again, saying: I will visit thy brethren
according to their diligence in keeping my commandments. I have given
unto them this land, and it is a holy land; and I curse it not saveit
be for the cause of iniquity; wherefore, I will visit thy brethren
according as I have said; and their transgressions will I bring down
with sorrow upon their own heads.
• • •
20
And I bear record that the people of Nephi did seek diligently to
restore the Lamanites unto the true faith in God. But our labors were
vain; their hatred was fixed, and they were led by their evil nature
that they became wild, and ferocious, and a blood-thirsty people, full
of idolatry and filthiness; feeding upon beasts of prey; dwelling in
tents, and wandering about in the wilderness with a short skin girdle
about their loins and their heads shaven; and their skill was in the
bow, and in the cimeter, and the ax. And many of them did eat nothing saveit was raw meat; and they were continually seeking to destroy us.
• • •
23
And there was nothing saveit
was exceeding harshness, preaching and prophesying of wars, and
contentions, and destructions, and continually reminding them of death,
and the duration of eternity, and the judgments and the power of God,
and all these things—stirring them up continually to keep them in the
fear of the Lord. I say there was nothing short of these things, and
exceedingly great plainness of speech, would keep them from going down
speedily to destruction. And after this manner do I write concerning
them.
25
And it came to pass that I began to be old;
and, having no seed, and knowing king Benjamin to be a just man before
the Lord, wherefore, I shall deliver up these plates unto him, exhorting
all men to come unto God, the Holy One of Israel, and believe in
prophesying, and in revelations, and in the ministering of angels, and
in the gift of speaking with tongues, and in the gift of interpreting
languages, and in all things which are good; for there is nothing which
is good saveit comes from the Lord; and that which is evil cometh from the devil.
19
And he commanded them that they should teach nothing saveit were the things which he had taught, and which had been spoken by the mouth of the holy prophets.
20
Yea, even he commanded them that they should preach nothing saveit were repentance and faith on the Lord, who had redeemed his people.
5
Yea, and all their priests and teachers should labor with their own hands for their support, in all cases saveit were in sickness, or in much want; and doing these things, they did abound in the grace of God.
• • •
13
Nevertheless he cried again, saying: Alma, arise and stand forth, for
why persecutest thou the church of God? For the Lord hath said: This is
my church, and I will establish it; and nothing shall overthrow it, saveit is the transgression of my people.
5
Now the heads of the Lamanites were shorn; and they were naked, saveit
were skin which was girded about their loins, and also their armor,
which was girded about them, and their bows, and their arrows, and their
stones, and their slings, and so forth.
19
And this he did that he himself might go forth among his people, or
among the people of Nephi, that he might preach the word of God unto
them, to stir them up in remembrance of their duty, and that he might
pull down, by the word of God, all the pride and craftiness and all the
contentions which were among his people, seeing no way that he might
reclaim them saveit were in bearing down in pure testimony against them.
12
Now they, after being sanctified by the Holy Ghost, having their
garments made white, being pure and spotless before God, could not look
upon sin saveit
were with abhorrence; and there were many, exceedingly great many, who
were made pure and entered into the rest of the Lord their God.
28
And Alma and Amulek came forth out of the prison, and they were not
hurt; for the Lord had granted unto them power, according to their faith
which was in Christ. And they straightway came forth out of the
prison; and they were loosed from their bands; and the prison had fallen
to the earth, and every soul within the walls thereof, saveit were Alma and Amulek, was slain; and they straightway came forth into the city.
38
Now six of them had fallen by the sling, but he slew none saveit were their leader with his sword; and he smote off as many of their arms as were lifted against him, and they were not a few.
16
And it came to pass that they did call on the name of the Lord, in their might, even until they had all fallen to the earth, saveit
were one of the Lamanitish women, whose name was Abish, she having been
converted unto the Lord for many years, on account of a remarkable
vision of her father—
5
And Ammon said unto him: No one hath told me, saveit be God; and he said unto me—Go and deliver thy brethren, for they are in prison in the land of Middoni.
9
Now Aaron began to open the scriptures unto them concerning the coming
of Christ, and also concerning the resurrection of the dead, and that
there could be no redemption for mankind saveit were through the death and sufferings of Christ, and the atonement of his blood.
1
Now, as Ammon was thus teaching the people of Lamoni continually,
we will return to the account of Aaron and his brethren; for after he
departed from the land of Middoni he was led by the Spirit to the land
of Nephi, even to the house of the king which was over all the land saveit were the land of Ishmael; and he was the father of Lamoni.
21
And now behold, my brethren, what natural man is there that knoweth
these things? I say unto you, there is none that knoweth these things, saveit be the penitent.
33
And notwithstanding the many labors which I have performed in the
church, I have never received so much as even one senine for my labor;
neither has any of my brethren, saveit were in the judgment-seat; and then we have received only according to law for our time.
34
And now, if we do not receive anything for our labors in the church, what doth it profit us to labor in the church saveit were to declare the truth, that we may have rejoicings in the joy of our brethren?
• • •
40
And now what evidence have ye that there is no God, or that Christ cometh not? I say unto you that ye have none, saveit be your word only.
• • •
52
And Korihor put forth his hand and wrote, saying: I know that I am dumb, for I cannot speak; and I know that nothing saveit were the power of God could bring this upon me; yea, and I always knew that there was a God.
38
And the Lord provided for them that they should hunger not, neither
should they thirst; yea, and he also gave them strength, that they
should suffer no manner of afflictions, saveit were swallowed up in the joy of Christ. Now this was according to the prayer of Alma; and this because he prayed in faith.
5
Know ye not, my son, that these things are an abomination in the sight of the Lord; yea, most abominable above all sins saveit be the shedding of innocent blood or denying the Holy Ghost?
20
Now the army of Zerahemnah was not prepared with any such thing; they
had only their swords and their cimeters, their bows and their arrows,
their stones and their slings; and they were naked, saveit were a skin which was girded about their loins; yea, all were naked, saveit were the Zoramites and the Amalekites;
14
But whosoever remaineth, and is not destroyed in that great and dreadful
day, shall be numbered among the Lamanites, and shall become like unto
them, all, saveit
be a few who shall be called the disciples of the Lord; and them shall
the Lamanites pursue even until they shall become extinct. And now,
because of iniquity, this prophecy shall be fulfilled.
4
But behold, how great was their disappointment; for behold, the Nephites
had dug up a ridge of earth round about them, which was so high that
the Lamanites could not cast their stones and their arrows at them that
they might take effect, neither could they come upon them saveit was by their place of entrance.
• • •
18
Now behold, the Lamanites could not get into their forts of security by any other way save
by the entrance, because of the highness of the bank which had been
thrown up, and the depth of the ditch which had been dug round about, saveit were by the entrance.
11
But behold, it supposeth me that I talk to you concerning these things in vain; or it
supposeth me that thou art a child of hell; therefore I will close my
epistle by telling you that I will not exchange prisoners, saveit
be on conditions that ye will deliver up a man and his wife and his
children, for one prisoner; if this be the case that ye will do it, I will exchange.
31
And those cities which had been taken by the Lamanites, all of them are
at this period of time in our possession; and our fathers and our women
and our children are returning to their homes, all saveit be those who have been taken prisoners and carried off by the Lamanites.
35
And thus they did encamp for the night. For behold, the Nephites and
the Lamanites also were weary because of the greatness of the march;
therefore they did not resolve upon any stratagem in the night-time, saveit
were Teancum; for he was exceedingly angry with Ammoron, insomuch that
he considered that Ammoron, and Amalickiah his brother, had been the
cause of this great and lasting war between them and the Lamanites,
which had been the cause of so much war and bloodshed, yea, and so much
famine.
12
Now behold, all those engravings which were in the possession of Helaman
were written and sent forth among the children of men throughout all
the land, saveit were those parts which had been commanded by Alma should not go forth.
24
And, supposing that their greatest strength was in the center of the
land, therefore he did march forth, giving them no time to assemble
themselves together saveit were in small bodies; and in this manner they did fall upon them and cut them down to the earth.
1
And now it came to pass in the forty and third year of the reign of the judges, there was no contention among the people of Nephi saveit
were a little pride which was in the church, which did cause some
little dissensions among the people, which affairs were settled in the
ending of the forty and third year.
• • •
6
And now no part of the land was desolate, saveit were for timber; but because of the greatness of the destruction of the people who had before inhabited the land it was called desolate.
• • •
23
And it came to pass in the forty and ninth year of the reign of the judges, there was continual peace established in the land, all saveit
were the secret combinations which Gadianton the robber had established
in the more settled parts of the land, which at that time were not
known unto those who were at the head of government; therefore they were
not destroyed out of the land.
• • •
33
And in the fifty and first year of the reign of the judges there was peace also, saveit
were the pride which began to enter into the church—not into the church
of God, but into the hearts of the people who professed to belong to
the church of God—
• • •
36
And it came to pass that the fifty and second year ended in peace also, saveit were the exceedingly great pride which had gotten into the hearts of the people; and it was because of their exceedingly great riches and their prosperity in the land; and it did grow upon them from day to day.
3
Yea, and this was not all; they were a stiffnecked people, insomuch that they could not be governed by the law nor justice, saveit were to their destruction.
23
For behold, thus saith the Lord: I will not show unto the wicked of my strength, to one more than the other, saveit
be unto those who repent of their sins, and hearken unto my words. Now
therefore, I would that ye should behold, my brethren, that it shall be better for the Lamanites than for you except ye shall repent.
36
And then shall he say unto you, that I, Nephi, know nothing concerning the matter saveit were given unto me by the power of God. And then shall ye know that I am an honest man, and that I am sent unto you from God.
22
And also they had peace in the seventy and eighth year, saveit were a few contentions concerning the points of doctrine which had been laid down by the prophets.
6
Yea, heavy destruction awaiteth this people, and it surely cometh unto this people, and nothing can save this people saveit
be repentance and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ, who surely shall come
into the world, and shall suffer many things and shall be slain for his
people.
• • •
19
For I will, saith the Lord, that they shall hide up their treasures unto
me; and cursed be they who hide not up their treasures unto me; for
none hideth up their treasures unto me saveit be the righteous; and he that hideth not up his treasures unto me, cursed is he, and also the treasure, and none shall redeem it because of the curse of the land.
12
And there was but little alteration in the affairs of the people, saveit
were the people began to be more hardened in iniquity, and do more and
more of that which was contrary to the commandments of God, in the
eighty and ninth year of the reign of the judges.
• • •
15
Nevertheless, the people began to harden their hearts, all saveit
were the most believing part of them, both of the Nephites and also of
the Lamanites, and began to depend upon their own strength and upon
their own wisdom, saying:
24
And there were no contentions, saveit were a few that began to preach, endeavoring to prove by the scriptures that it was no more expedient to observe the law of Moses. Now in this thing they did err, having not understood the scriptures.
• • •
27
And it came to pass that the ninety and third year did also pass away in peace, saveit
were for the Gadianton robbers, who dwelt upon the mountains, who did
infest the land; for so strong were their holds and their secret places
that the people could not overpower them; therefore they did commit many
murders, and did do much slaughter among the people.
11
And now it came to pass when Lachoneus
received this epistle he was exceedingly astonished, because of the
boldness of Giddianhi demanding the possession of the land of the
Nephites, and also of threatening the people and avenging the wrongs of
those that had received no wrong, saveit were they had wronged themselves by dissenting away unto those wicked and abominable robbers.
• • •
13
Yea, he sent a proclamation among all the people, that they should
gather together their women, and their children, their flocks and their
herds, and all their substance, saveit were their land, unto one place.
• • •
19
Now it was the custom among all the Nephites to appoint for their chief captains, (saveit
were in their times of wickedness) some one that had the spirit of
revelation and also prophecy; therefore, this Gidgiddoni was a great
prophet among them, as also was the chief judge.
2
But behold, there were no wild beasts nor game in those lands which had
been deserted by the Nephites, and there was no game for the robbers saveit were in the wilderness.
3
And the robbers could not exist saveit
were in the wilderness, for the want of food; for the Nephites had left
their lands desolate, and had gathered their flocks and their herds and
all their substance, and they were in one body.
4
Therefore, there was no chance for the robbers to plunder and to obtain food, saveit
were to come up in open battle against the Nephites; and the Nephites
being in one body, and having so great a number, and having reserved for
themselves provisions, and horses and cattle, and flocks of every kind,
that they might subsist for the space of seven years, in the which time
they did hope to destroy the robbers from off the face of the land; and
thus the eighteenth year did pass away.
5
And it came to pass that in the nineteenth year Giddianhi found that it was expedient that he should go up to battle against the Nephites, for there was no way that they could subsist saveit were to plunder and rob and murder.
• • •
19
And because of the scantiness of provisions among the robbers; for behold, they had nothing saveit were meat for their subsistence, which meat they did obtain in the wilderness;
20
I am Mormon, and a pure descendant of Lehi. I have reason to bless my
God and my Savior Jesus Christ, that he brought our fathers out of the
land of Jerusalem, (and no one knew itsaveit
were himself and those whom he brought out of that land) and that he
hath given me and my people so much knowledge unto the salvation of our
souls.
14
And thus there became a great inequality in all the land, insomuch that
the church began to be broken up; yea, insomuch that in the thirtieth year the church was broken up in all the land saveit were among a few of the Lamanites who were converted unto the true faith; and they would not depart from it, for they were firm, and steadfast, and immovable, willing with all diligence to keep the commandments of the Lord.
11
And it came to pass that they were not so strong in number as the tribes of the people, who were united together saveit
were their leaders did establish their laws, every one according to his
tribe; nevertheless they were enemies; notwithstanding they were not a
righteous people, yet they were united in the hatred of those who had
entered into a covenant to destroy the government.
23
And they understood me not that I said they shall hear my voice; and
they understood me not that the Gentiles should not at any time hear my
voice—that I should not manifest myself unto them saveit were by the Holy Ghost.
8
And how be it my church saveit be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses’ name then it be Moses’ church; or if it be called in the name of a man then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel.
• • •
19
And no unclean thing can enter into his kingdom; therefore nothing entereth into his rest saveit
be those who have washed their garments in my blood, because of their
faith, and the repentance of all their sins, and their faithfulness unto
the end.
• • •
23
Write the things which ye have seen and heard, saveit be those which are forbidden.
2
And they all spake, saveit
were three, saying: We desire that after we have lived unto the age of
man, that our ministry, wherein thou hast called us, may have an end,
that we may speedily come unto thee in thy kingdom.
• • •
9
And again, ye shall not have pain while ye shall dwell in the flesh, neither sorrow saveit
be for the sins of the world; and all this will I do because of the
thing which ye have desired of me, for ye have desired that ye might
bring the souls of men unto me, while the world shall stand.
• • •
12
And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words, he touched every one of them with his finger saveit were the three who were to tarry, and then he departed.
• • •
38
Therefore, that they might not taste of death there was a change wrought
upon their bodies, that they might not suffer pain nor sorrow saveit were for the sins of the world.
5
And there were great and marvelous works wrought by the disciples of
Jesus, insomuch that they did heal the sick, and raise the dead, and
cause the lame to walk, and the blind to receive their sight, and the
deaf to hear; and all manner of miracles did they work among the
children of men; and in nothing did they work miracles saveit were in the name of Jesus.

And it came to pass that the seventy
and first year passed away, and also the seventy and second year, yea,
and in fine, till the seventy and ninth year had passed away; yea, even
an hundred years had passed away, and the disciples of Jesus, whom he
had chosen, had all gone to the paradise of God, saveit
were the three who should tarry; and there were other disciples
ordained in their stead; and also many of that generation had passed
away.
• • •
20
And he kept it eighty and four years, and there was still peace in the land, saveit
were a small part of the people who had revolted from the church and
taken upon them the name of Lamanites; therefore there began to be
Lamanites again in the land.
• • •
22
And it came to pass that two hundred years had passed away; and the second generation had all passed away saveit were a few.
• • •
46
And it came to pass that the robbers of Gadianton did spread over all the face of the land; and there were none that were righteous saveit
were the disciples of Jesus. And gold and silver did they lay up in
store in abundance, and did traffic in all manner of traffic.
6
And it came to pass that when we had gathered
in all our people in one to the land of Cumorah, behold I, Mormon, began
to be old; and knowing it to be the last
struggle of my people, and having been commanded of the Lord that I
should not suffer the records which had been handed down by our fathers,
which were sacred, to fall into the hands of the Lamanites, (for the
Lamanites would destroy them) therefore I made this record out of the
plates of Nephi, and hid up in the hill Cumorah all the records which
had been entrusted to me by the hand of the Lord, saveit were these few plates which I gave unto my son Moroni.
• • •
11
And when they had gone through and hewn down all my people saveit
were twenty and four of us, (among whom was my son Moroni) and we
having survived the dead of our people, did behold on the morrow, when
the Lamanites had returned unto their camps, from the top of the hill
Cumorah, the ten thousand of my people who were hewn down, being led in
the front by me.
• • •
15
And it came to pass that there were ten more who did fall by the sword, with their ten thousand each; yea, even all my people, saveit
were those twenty and four who were with me, and also a few who had
escaped into the south countries, and a few who had deserted over unto
the Lamanites, had fallen; and their flesh, and bones, and blood lay
upon the face of the earth, being left by the hands of those who slew
them to molder upon the land, and to crumble and to return to their
mother earth.
4
Know ye that ye must lay down your weapons of war, and delight no more in the shedding of blood, and take them not again, saveit be that God shall command you.
9
And now, behold, I say no more concerning them, for there are none saveit be the Lamanites and robbers that do exist upon the face of the land.
10
And there are none that do know the true God saveit
be the disciples of Jesus, who did tarry in the land until the
wickedness of the people was so great that the Lord would not suffer
them to remain with the people; and whether they be upon the face of the
land no man knoweth.

15
For none can have power to bring it to light saveit be given him of God; for God wills that it shall be done with an eye single to his glory, or the welfare of the ancient and long dispersed covenant people of the Lord.
19
And behold, O Lord, in them there is no light; whither shall we steer?
And also we shall perish, for in them we cannot breathe, saveit is the air which is in them; therefore we shall perish.
3
And now, after that, they have all dwindled in unbelief; and there is none saveit
be the Lamanites, and they have rejected the gospel of Christ;
therefore I am commanded that I should hide them up again in the earth.
• • •
12
And whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do good is of me; for good cometh of none saveit
be of me. I am the same that leadeth men to all good; he that will not
believe my words will not believe me—that I am; and he that will not
believe me will not believe the Father who sent me. For behold, I am
the Father, I am the light, and the life, and the truth of the world.
3
And the Lord warned Omer in a dream that he should depart out of the
land; wherefore Omer departed out of the land with his family, and
traveled many days, and came over and passed by the hill of Shim, and
came over by the place where the Nephites were destroyed, and from
thence eastward, and came to a place which was called Ablom, by the
seashore, and there he pitched his tent, and also his sons and his
daughters, and all his household, saveit were Jared and his family.
• • •
12
And there began to be a war between the sons of Akish and Akish, which
lasted for the space of many years, yea, unto the destruction of nearly
all the people of the kingdom, yea, even all, saveit were thirty souls, and they who fled with the house of Omer.
1
Andit came to pass that Shez, who was a descendant of Heth—for Heth had perished by the famine, and all his household saveit were Shez—wherefore, Shez began to build up again a broken people.
21
Otherwise they should be destroyed, and all his household saveit
were himself. And he should only live to see the fulfilling of the
prophecies which had been spoken concerning another people receiving the
land for their inheritance; and Coriantumr should receive a burial by
them; and every soul should be destroyed saveit were Coriantumr.
12
And it came to pass that they did gather together all the people upon all the face of the land, who had not been slain, saveit was Ether.
• • •
23
And on the morrow they fought again; and when the night came they had all fallen by the sword saveit were fifty and two of the people of Coriantumr, and sixty and nine of the people of Shiz.
• • •
29
Wherefore, he did pursue them, and on the morrow he did overtake them; and they fought again with the sword. And it came to pass that when they had all fallen by the sword, saveit were Coriantumr and Shiz, behold Shiz had fainted with the loss of blood.
7
Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought saveit was to ask me.
• • •
9
But if it be not right you shall have no such
feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to
forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which
is sacred saveit be given you from me.
15
And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, saveit be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!
• • •
20
Contend against no church, saveit be the church of the devil.
• • •
35
For it is my voice which speaketh them unto
you; for they are given by my Spirit unto you, and by my power you can
read them one to another; and saveit were by my power you could not have them;
4
And my vineyard has become corrupted every whit; and there is none which doeth good saveit be a few; and they err in many instances because of priestcrafts, all having corrupt minds.
23
And now, concerning my servants, Sidney Rigdon, Joseph Smith, Jun., and
Oliver Cowdery, let them come not again upon the waters, saveit be upon the canal, while journeying unto their homes; or in other words they shall not come upon the waters to journey, save upon the canal.
22
And again, no bishop or high priest who shall be set apart for this ministry shall be tried or condemned for any crime, saveit be before the First Presidency of the church;
68
And all moneys that you receive in your stewardships, by improving upon
the properties which I have appointed unto you, in houses, or in lands,
or in cattle, or in all things saveit
be the holy and sacred writings, which I have reserved unto myself for
holy and sacred purposes, shall be cast into the treasury as fast as you
receive moneys, by hundreds, or by fifties, or by twenties, or by tens,
or by fives.
12
And it came to pass that Enoch continued to call upon all the people, saveit were the people of Canaan, to repent;
• • •
22
And Enoch also beheld the residue of the people which were the sons of Adam; and they were a mixture of all the seed of Adam saveit was the seed of Cain, for the seed of Cain were black, and had not place among them.
