1
Now it came to pass that in the first yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, from this time forward, king Mosiah having gone the way of all the earth, having warred a good warfare, walking uprightly before God, leaving none to reign in his stead; nevertheless he had established laws, and they were acknowledged by the people; therefore they were obliged to abide by the laws which he had made.
• • •
33
And it came to pass that by thus exercising the
law upon them, every man suffering according to that which he had done,
they became more still, and durst not commit any wickedness if it were
known; therefore, there was much peace among the people of Nephi until the fifth yearofthereignofthejudges.
25
Now all these things were done, yea, all these wars and contentions were commenced and ended in the fifth yearofthereignofthejudges.
• • •
27
For every man receiveth wages of him whom he listeth to obey, and this according to the words ofthe spirit of prophecy; therefore let it be according to the truth. And thus endeth the fifth yearofthereignofthejudges.
1
Now it came to pass in the sixth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, there were no contentions nor wars in the land of Zarahemla;
• • •
5
And it came to pass in the seventh yearofthereignofthejudges there were about three thousand five hundred souls that united themselves to the church of God and were baptized. And thus ended the seventh yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi; and there was continual peace in all that time.
6
And it came to pass in the eighth yearofthereignofthejudges, that the people ofthe church began to wax proud, because of their exceeding riches, and their fine silks, and their fine-twined linen, and because of their many flocks and herds, and their gold and their silver, and all manner of precious things, which they had obtained by their industry; and in all these things were they lifted up in the pride of their eyes, for they began to wear very costly apparel.
• • •
9
And thus, in this eighth yearofthereignofthejudges, there began to be great contentions among the people ofthe church; yea, there were envyings, and strife, and malice, and persecutions, and pride, even to exceed the pride of those who did not belong to the church of God.
10
And thus ended the eighth yearofthereignofthejudges; and the wickedness ofthe church was a great stumbling-block to those who did not belong to the church; and thus the church began to fail in its progress.
• • •
20
And thus in the commencement ofthe ninth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, Alma delivered up thejudgment-seat to Nephihah, and confined himself wholly to the high priesthood ofthe holy order of God, to the testimony ofthe word, according to the spirit of revelation and prophecy.
2
And thus ended the ninth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
3
And it came to pass in the commencement ofthe tenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, that Alma departed from thence and took his journey over into the land of Melek, on the west ofthe river Sidon, on the west by the borders ofthe wilderness.
6
Nevertheless, I did harden my heart, for I was called many times and I
would not hear; therefore I knew concerning these things, yet I would
not know; therefore I went on rebelling against God, in the wickedness of my heart, even until the fourth day of this seventh month, which is in the tenth yearofthereignofthejudges.
23
And it came to pass after they had thus suffered for many days, (and it was on the twelfth day, in the tenth month, in the tenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi) that the chief judge over the land of Ammonihah and many of their teachers and their lawyers went in unto the prison where Alma and Amulek were bound with cords.
1
And it came to pass in the eleventh yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, on the fifth day ofthe second month, there having been much peace in the land of Zarahemla, there having been no wars nor contentions for a certain number of years, even until the fifth day ofthe second month in the eleventh year, there was a cry of war heard throughout the land.
• • •
12
And the Lamanites did not come again to war against the Nephites until the fourteenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi. And thus for three years did the people of Nephi have continual peace in all the land.
• • •
21
And now after the church had been established throughout all the land—having got the victory over the devil, and the word of God being preached in its purity in all the land, and the Lord pouring out his blessings upon the people—thus ended the fourteenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
7
And thus endeth the fifteenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi;
• • •
9
And this is the account ofthe wars and contentions among the Nephites, and also the wars between the Nephites and the Lamanites; and the fifteenth yearofthereignofthejudges is ended.
2
Now their dead were not numbered because ofthe greatness of their numbers; neither were the dead ofthe Nephites numbered—but it came to pass after they had buried their dead, and also after the days of fasting, and mourning, and prayer, (and it was in the sixteenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi) there began to be continual peace throughout all the land.
• • •
4
And thus the people did have no disturbance in all the sixteenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
5
And it came to pass that in the commencement ofthe seventeenth yearofthereignofthejudges, there was continual peace.
12
And thus ended the seventeenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
13
And the people of Ammon departed out ofthe land of Jershon, and came over into the land of Melek, and gave place in the land of Jershon for the armies ofthe Nephites, that they might contend with the armies ofthe Lamanites and the armies ofthe Zoramites; and thus commenced a war betwixt the Lamanites and the Nephites, in the eighteenth yearofthereignofthejudges; and an account shall be given of their wars hereafter.
24
And thus ended the eighteenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi. And thus ended the record of Alma, which was written upon the plates of Nephi.
2
And it came to pass in the nineteenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, that Alma came unto his son Helaman and said unto him: Believest thou the words which I spake unto thee concerning those records which have been kept?
• • •
20
And now it came to pass in the commencement ofthe nineteenth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, that Helaman went forth among the people to declare the word unto them.
37
And they began to have peace again in the land; and thus they did maintain peace in the land until nearly the end ofthe nineteenth yearofthereignofthejudges.
2
And thus he did inspire their hearts against the Nephites, insomuch that in the latter end ofthe nineteenth yearofthereignofthejudges, he having accomplished his designs thus far, yea, having been made king over the Lamanites, he sought also to reign over all the land, yea, and all the people who were in the land, the Nephites as well as the Lamanites.
1
And now it came to pass that Moroni did not stop making preparations for war, or to defend his people against the Lamanites; for he caused that his armies should commence in the commencement ofthe twentieth yearofthereignofthejudges, that they should commence in digging up heaps of earth round about all the cities, throughout all the land which was possessed by the Nephites.
• • •
17
And in these prosperous circumstances were the people of Nephi in the commencement ofthe twenty and first yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
• • •
23
But behold there never was a happier time among the people of Nephi, since the days of Nephi, than in the days of Moroni, yea, even at this time, in the twenty and first yearofthereignofthejudges.
24
And it came to pass that the twenty and second yearofthereignofthejudges also ended in peace; yea, and also the twenty and third year.
25
And it came to pass that in the commencement ofthe twenty and fourth yearofthereignofthejudges, there would also have been peace among the people of Nephi had it not been for a contention which took place among them concerning the land of Lehi, and the land of Morianton, which joined upon the borders of Lehi; both of which were on the borders by the seashore.
• • •
35
And it came to pass that the army which was sent by Moroni, which was led by a man whose name was Teancum, did meet the people of Morianton; and so stubborn were the people of Morianton, (being inspired by his wickedness and his flattering words) that a battle commenced between them, in the which Teancum did slay Morianton and defeat his army, and took them prisoners, and returned to the camp of Moroni. And thus ended the twenty and fourth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
1
And now it came to pass in the commencement ofthe twenty and fifth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, they having established peace between the people of Lehi and the people of Morianton concerning their lands, and having commenced the twenty and fifth year in peace;
• • •
12
Yea, even Amalickiah did himself come down, at the head ofthe Lamanites. And it was in the twenty and fifth yearofthereignofthejudges; and it was at the same time that they had begun to settle the affairs of their contentions concerning the chief judge, Pahoran.
• • •
37
And thus endeth the twenty and fifth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi; and thus endeth the days of Amalickiah.
1
And now, it came to pass in the twenty and sixth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, behold, when the Lamanites awoke on the first morning ofthe
first month, behold, they found Amalickiah was dead in his own tent;
and they also saw that Teancum was ready to give them battle on that
day.
• • •
14
And thus were the Nephites in those dangerous circumstances in the ending ofthe twenty and sixth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
15
But behold, it came to pass in the twenty and seventh yearofthereignofthejudges, that Teancum, by the command of Moroni—who had established armies to protect the south and the west borders ofthe land, and had begun his march towards the land Bountiful, that he might assist Teancum with his men in retaking the cities which they had lost—
• • •
18
And it came to pass that Moroni did arrive with his army at the land of Bountiful, in the latter end ofthe twenty and seventh yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
1
And now it came to pass in the commencement ofthe thirtieth yearofthereignofthejudges, on the second day in the first month, Moroni received an epistle from Helaman, stating the affairs ofthe people in that quarter ofthe land.
1
Now it came to pass in the thirtieth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, after Moroni had received and had read Helaman’s epistle, he was exceedingly rejoiced because ofthe welfare, yea, the exceeding success which Helaman had had, in obtaining those lands which were lost.
11
And thus ended the thirtieth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi; Moroni and Pahoran having restored peace to the land of Zarahemla, among their own people, having inflicted death upon all those who were not true to the cause of freedom.
12
And it came to pass in the commencement ofthe thirty and first yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, Moroni immediately caused that provisions should be sent, and also an army of six thousand men should be sent unto Helaman, to assist him in preserving that part ofthe land.
• • •
39
And thus ended the thirty and first yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi; and thus they had had wars, and bloodsheds, and famine, and affliction, for the space of many years.
• • •
52
And it came to pass that all these things were done. And Helaman died, in the thirty and fifth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
1
And it came to pass in the commencement ofthe thirty and sixth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, that Shiblon took possession of those sacred things which had been delivered unto Helaman by Alma.
• • •
3
And it came to pass that Moroni died also. And thus ended the thirty and sixth yearofthereignofthejudges.
4
And it came to pass that in the thirty and seventh yearofthereignofthejudges, there was a large company of men, even to the amount of five thousand and four hundred men, with their wives and their children, departed out ofthe land of Zarahemla into the land which was northward.
• • •
10
And it came to pass in the thirty and ninth yearofthereignofthejudges, Shiblon died also, and Corianton had gone forth to the land northward in a ship, to carry forth provisions unto the people who had gone forth into that land.
• • •
16
And thus ended the thirty and ninth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
1
And now behold, it came to pass in the commencement ofthe fortieth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, there began to be a serious difficulty among the people ofthe Nephites.
• • •
13
And now behold, Pacumeni was appointed, according to the voice ofthe people, to be a chief judge and a governor over the people, to reign in the stead of his brother Pahoran; and it was according to his right. And all this was done in the fortieth yearofthereignofthejudges; and it had an end.
14
And it came to pass in the forty and first yearofthereignofthejudges, that the Lamanites had gathered together an innumerable army of
men, and armed them with swords, and with cimeters and with bows, and
with arrows, and with head-plates, and with breastplates, and with all
manner of shields of every kind.
• • •
34
And thus ended the forty and first yearofthereignofthejudges.
1
And it came to pass in the forty and second yearofthereignofthejudges, after Moronihah had established again peace between the Nephites and the Lamanites, behold there was no one to fill thejudgment-seat; therefore there began to be a contention again among the people concerning who should fill thejudgment-seat.
• • •
12
And more of this Gadianton shall be spoken hereafter. And thus ended the forty and second yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
1
And now it came to pass in the forty and third yearofthereignofthejudges, there was no contention among the people of Nephi save it were a little pride which was in the church, which did cause some little dissensions among the people, which affairs were settled in the ending ofthe forty and third year.
• • •
18
The forty and sixth yearofthereignofthejudges ended;
• • •
22
And it came to pass that the wars and contentions began to cease, in a small degree, among the people ofthe Nephites, in the latter end ofthe forty and eighth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
23
And it came to pass in the forty and ninth yearofthereignofthejudges, there was continual peace established in the land, all save it were the secret combinations which Gadianton the robber had established in the more settled parts ofthe land, which at that time were not known unto those who were at the head of government; therefore they were not destroyed out ofthe land.
• • •
32
And it came to pass that there was peace and exceedingly great joy in the remainder ofthe forty and ninth year; yea, and also there was continual peace and great joy in the fiftieth yearofthereignofthejudges.
33
And in the fifty and first yearofthereignofthejudges there was peace also, save it were the pride which began to enter into the church—not into the church of God, but into the hearts ofthe people who professed to belong to the church of God—
• • •
37
And it came to pass in the fifty and third yearofthereignofthejudges, Helaman died, and his eldest son Nephi began to reign in his stead. And it came to pass that he did fill thejudgment-seat with justice and equity; yea, he did keep the commandments of God, and did walk in the ways of his father.
4
But it came to pass in the fifty and sixth yearofthereignofthejudges, there were dissenters who went up from the Nephites unto the Lamanites; and they succeeded with those others in stirring them up to anger against the Nephites; and they were all that year preparing for war.
5
And in the fifty and seventh year they did come down against the Nephites to battle, and they did commence the work of death; yea, insomuch that in the fifty and eighth yearofthereignofthejudges they succeeded in obtaining possession ofthe land of Zarahemla; yea, and also all the lands, even unto the land which was near the land Bountiful.
• • •
9
And it came to pass in the sixtieth yearofthereignofthejudges, Moronihah did succeed with his armies in obtaining many parts ofthe land; yea, they regained many cities which had fallen into the hands ofthe Lamanites.
10
And it came to pass in the sixty and first yearofthereignofthejudges they succeeded in regaining even the half of all their possessions.
• • •
17
And thus ended the sixty and first yearofthereignofthejudges.
18
And it came to pass in the sixty and second yearofthereignofthejudges, that Moronihah could obtain no more possessions over the Lamanites.
1
And it came to pass that when the sixty and second yearofthereignofthejudges had ended, all these things had happened and the Lamanites had become, the more part of them, a righteous people, insomuch that their righteousness did exceed that ofthe Nephites, because of their firmness and their steadiness in the faith.
• • •
15
And it came to pass that in the sixty and sixth yearofthereignofthejudges, behold, Cezoram was murdered by an unknown hand as he sat upon thejudgment-seat. And it came to pass that in the same year, that his son, who had been appointed by the people in his stead, was also murdered. And thus ended the sixty and sixth year.
• • •
32
And it came to pass that all these iniquities did come unto them in the space of not many years, insomuch that a more part of it had come unto them in the sixty and seventh yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
• • •
41
And it came to pass that thus ended the sixty and eighth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
1
Behold, now it came to pass in the sixty and ninth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people ofthe Nephites, that Nephi, the son of Helaman, returned to the land of Zarahemla from the land northward.
1
And now it came to pass in the seventy and second yearofthereignofthejudges that the contentions did increase, insomuch that there were wars throughout all the land among all the people of Nephi.
• • •
24
And it came to pass that in the eightieth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi, there were a certain number ofthe dissenters from the people of Nephi, who had some years before gone over unto the Lamanites, and taken upon themselves the name of Lamanites, and also a certain number who were real descendants ofthe Lamanites, being stirred up to anger by them, or by those dissenters, therefore they commenced a war with their brethren.
• • •
29
But behold, it came to pass that in that same year they were driven back even into their own lands. And thus ended the eightieth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
• • •
35
And thus ended the eighty and first yearofthereignofthejudges.
9
And thus ended the eighty and sixth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
10
And thus ended also the eighty and seventh yearofthereignofthejudges, the more part ofthe people remaining in their pride and wickedness, and the lesser part walking more circumspectly before God.
11
And these were the conditions also, in the eighty and eighth yearofthereignofthejudges.
12
And there was but little alteration in the affairs ofthe people, save it were the people began to be more hardened in iniquity, and do more and more of that which was contrary to the commandments of God, in the eighty and ninth yearofthereignofthejudges.
13
But it came to pass in the ninetieth yearofthereignofthejudges, there were great signs given unto the people, and wonders; and the words ofthe prophets began to be fulfilled.
• • •
24
And thus ended the ninetieth yearofthereignofthejudges over the people of Nephi.
