26
And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it
a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and
vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?
13
¶ And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.
• • •
27
And he said, If the Lord do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?
• • •
31
Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.
32
But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said
to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away
mine head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold
him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
33
And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the Lord; what should I wait for the Lord any longer?
5
And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were sitting; and he said, I have an errand to thee, O captain. And Jehu said, Unto which of all us? And he said, To thee, O captain.
• • •
11
¶ Then Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord: and one said unto him, Is all well? wherefore came this mad fellow to thee? And he said unto them, Ye know the man, and his communication.
12
And they said, It is false; tell us now. And he said, Thus and thus spake he to me, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I have anointed thee king over Israel.

22
And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?

And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot.
• • •
36
Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the Lord, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel:

And when he was come to the king, the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And he said, Go ye up, and prosper, and they shall be delivered into your hand.
• • •
16
Then he said, I did see all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd: and the Lord said, These have no master; let them return therefore every man to his house in peace.
• • •
18
Again he said, Therefore hear the word of the Lord; I saw the Lord sitting upon his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left.
• • •
21
And he said, I will go out, and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And the Lord said, Thou shalt entice him, and thou shalt also prevail: go out, and do even so.
• • •
27
And Micaiah said, If thou certainly return in peace, then hath not the Lord spoken by me. And he said, Hearken, all ye people.
• • •
33
And a certain man drew a bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the joints of the harness: therefore he said to his chariot man, Turn thine hand, that thou mayest carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.

Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.
• • •
3
And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.
4
¶ And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them.
• • •
10
Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears.
• • •
22
¶ And the hand of the Lord was there upon me; and he said unto me, Arise, go forth into the plain, and I will there talk with thee.

• • •
25
Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.
9
And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
• • •
11
And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
• • •
13
And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?
• • •
21
¶ And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?
• • •
24
And he said unto
them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be
measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
• • •
26
¶ And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
• • •
30
¶ And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
• • •
40
And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
4

22
But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?
• • •
24
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
• • •

8
And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
• • •
10
And he said, Unto
you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to
others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they
might not understand.
• • •
22
¶ Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
• • •
25
And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
• • •
30
And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.
• • •

And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.

For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
• • •

He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
• • •
23
¶ And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
• • •
33
And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said
unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three
tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not
knowing what he said.
• • •
43
¶ And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
• • •
59
And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
2
And he said unto
them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy
name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
• • •
5
And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;
• • •
28
But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
• • •
46
And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
• • •
53
And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:
8
And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:
• • •
17
And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
• • •
20
And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?
• • •
23
Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,
• • •
32
And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
1
And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.
• • •
6
And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.
7
Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.
• • •
15
And he said unto
them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth
your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination
in the sight of God.
• • •
27
Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:
• • •
30
And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31
And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
4
And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
• • •
21
And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.
22
Now when Jesus heard these things, he said
unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and
distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and
come, follow me.
• • •
24
And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
• • •
27
And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
• • •
29
And he said unto
them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or
parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s
sake,
• • •
41
Saying, What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
10
And he said unto
them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet
you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.
• • •
13
And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
• • •
15
And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
• • •
25
And he said unto
them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they
that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.

And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
• • •
38
And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.
• • •
40
And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
• • •
61
And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
• • •
67
Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
• • •
70
Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
17
And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
• • •
19
And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
• • •
25
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
• • •
38
And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
• • •
41
And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
• • •
44
And he said unto them, These are
the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all
things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
9
Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.
• • •
12
Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
• • •
15
Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
• • •
17
They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
• • •
35
Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
• • •
38
And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
4
And it came to pass that the master of the vineyard went forth, and he saw that his olive-tree began to decay; and he said:
I will prune it, and dig about it, and nourish it, that perhaps it may
shoot forth young and tender branches, and it perish not.
• • •
7
And it came to pass that the master of the vineyard saw it, and he said
unto his servant: It grieveth me that I should lose this tree;
wherefore, go and pluck the branches from a wild olive-tree, and bring
them hither unto me; and we will pluck off those main branches which are
beginning to wither away, and we will cast them into the fire that they
may be burned.
• • •
18
And he said unto the
servant: Behold, the branches of the wild tree have taken hold of the
moisture of the root thereof, that the root thereof hath brought forth
much strength; and because of the much strength of the root thereof the
wild branches have brought forth tame fruit. Now, if we had not grafted
in these branches, the tree thereof would have perished. And now,
behold, I shall lay up much fruit, which the tree thereof hath brought
forth; and the fruit thereof I shall lay up against the season, unto
mine own self.
• • •
20
And it came to pass that they went forth whither the master had hid the natural branches of the tree, and he said unto the servant: Behold these; and he beheld the first that it had brought forth much fruit; and he beheld also that it was good. And he said
unto the servant: Take of the fruit thereof, and lay it up against the
season, that I may preserve it unto mine own self; for behold, said he, this long time have I nourished it, and it hath brought forth much fruit.
• • •
25
And he said unto the
servant: Look hither and behold the last. Behold, this have I planted
in a good spot of ground; and I have nourished it this long time, and
only a part of the tree hath brought forth tame fruit, and the other
part of the tree hath brought forth wild fruit; behold, I have nourished
this tree like unto the others.
9
And I said unto him: Deniest thou the Christ who shall come? And he said: If there should be a Christ, I would not deny him; but I know that there is no Christ, neither has been, nor ever will be.
10
And I said unto him: Believest thou the scriptures? And he said, Yea.
• • •
13
And it came to pass that he said unto me: Show me a sign by this power of the Holy Ghost, in the which ye know so much.
• • •
16
And it came to pass that he said
unto the people: Gather together on the morrow, for I shall die;
wherefore, I desire to speak unto the people before I shall die.
• • •
19
And he said: I fear lest I have committed the unpardonable sin, for I have lied unto God; for I denied the Christ, and said
that I believed the scriptures; and they truly testify of him. And
because I have thus lied unto God I greatly fear lest my case shall be
awful; but I confess unto God.
20
And it came to pass that when he had said these words he could say no more, and he gave up the ghost.
9
And he said unto
them: Behold, I am Limhi, the son of Noah, who was the son of Zeniff,
who came up out of the land of Zarahemla to inherit this land, which was
the land of their fathers, who was made a king by the voice of the
people.
• • •
12
And now, when Ammon saw that he was permitted to speak, he went forth and bowed himself before the king; and rising again he said:
O king, I am very thankful before God this day that I am yet alive, and
am permitted to speak; and I will endeavor to speak with boldness;
• • •
27
And because he said unto them that Christ was the God, the Father of all things, and said that he
should take upon him the image of man, and it should be the image after
which man was created in the beginning; or in other words, he said
that man was created after the image of God, and that God should come
down among the children of men, and take upon him flesh and blood, and
go forth upon the face of the earth—
28
And now, because he said
this, they did put him to death; and many more things did they do which
brought down the wrath of God upon them. Therefore, who wondereth that
they are in bondage, and that they are smitten with sore afflictions?
4
And now, when the king heard these words, he said unto them: Now I know that it is the Great Spirit; and he
has come down at this time to preserve your lives, that I might not
slay you as I did your brethren. Now this is the Great Spirit of whom
our fathers have spoken.
• • •
13
And one of the king’s servants said unto him, Rabbanah, which is, being interpreted, powerful or great king, considering their kings to be powerful; and thus he said unto him: Rabbanah, the king desireth thee to stay.
• • •
16
And it came to pass that Ammon, being filled with the Spirit of God, therefore he perceived the thoughts of the king. And he said
unto him: Is it because thou hast heard that I defended thy servants
and thy flocks, and slew seven of their brethren with the sling and with
the sword, and smote off the arms of others, in order to defend thy
flocks and thy servants; behold, is it this that causeth thy marvelings?
• • •
22
Now Ammon being wise, yet harmless, he said
unto Lamoni: Wilt thou hearken unto my words, if I tell thee by what
power I do these things? And this is the thing that I desire of thee.
• • •
• • •
29
And he said: Yea, I believe that he created all things which are in the earth; but I do not know the heavens.
• • •
40
And it came to pass that after he had said all these things, and expounded them to the king, that the king believed all his words.
• • •
42
And now, when he had said this, he fell unto the earth, as if he were dead.
3
Now it came to pass that when Ammon had heard this, he said unto Lamoni: Behold, my brother and brethren are in prison at Middoni, and I go that I may deliver them.
• • •
5
And Ammon said unto him: No one hath told me, save it be God; and he said unto me—Go and deliver thy brethren, for they are in prison in the land of Middoni.
• • •
7
And he said unto Ammon: Come, I will go with thee down to the land of Middoni, and there I will plead with the king that he will cast thy brethren out of prison.
• • •
10
And he also said: Whither art thou going with this Nephite, who is one of the children of a liar?
• • •
24
Now when Ammon saw that he had wrought upon the old king according to his desire, he said
unto him: If thou wilt grant that my brethren may be cast out of
prison, and also that Lamoni may retain his kingdom, and that ye be not
displeased with him, but grant that he may do according to his own desires in whatsoever thing he thinketh, then will I spare thee; otherwise I will smite thee to the earth.
1
Now after Alma had spoken these words, they sent forth unto him
desiring to know whether they should believe in one God, that they might
obtain this fruit of which he had spoken, or how they should plant the seed, or the word of which he had spoken, which he said must be planted in their hearts; or in what manner they should begin to exercise their faith.
• • •
4
For he said: Thou
art merciful, O God, for thou hast heard my prayer, even when I was in
the wilderness; yea, thou wast merciful when I prayed concerning those
who were mine enemies, and thou didst turn them to me.
• • •
13
Behold, if ye do, ye must believe what Zenos said; for, behold he said: Thou hast turned away thy judgments because of thy Son.
• • •
16
For behold, he said:
Thou art angry, O Lord, with this people, because they will not
understand thy mercies which thou hast bestowed upon them because of thy
Son.
1
Behold, now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words he looked round about again on the multitude, and he said unto them: Behold, my time is at hand.
• • •
6
And he said unto them: Behold, my bowels are filled with compassion towards you.
• • •
15
And when he had said these words, he himself also knelt upon the earth; and behold he prayed unto the Father, and the things which he prayed cannot be written, and the multitude did bear record who heard him.
• • •
20
And they arose from the earth, and he said unto them: Blessed are ye because of your faith. And now behold, my joy is full.
21
And when he had said these words, he wept, and the multitude bare record of it, and he took their little children, one by one, and blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them.
2
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bare a son, and he called his name Seth. And Adam glorified the name of God; for he said: God hath appointed me another seed, instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
• • •
41
And he said unto
them: I came out from the land of Cainan, the land of my fathers, a land
of righteousness unto this day. And my father taught me in all the
ways of God.
• • •
48
And he said unto them: Because that Adam fell, we are; and by his fall came death; and we are made partakers of misery and woe.
• • •
52
And he also said
unto him: If thou wilt turn unto me, and hearken unto my voice, and
believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in
water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and
truth, which is Jesus Christ, the only name which shall be given under
heaven, whereby salvation shall come unto the children of men, ye shall
receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, asking all things in his name, and
whatsoever ye shall ask, it shall be given you.
12
And he said unto me: My son, my son (and his hand was stretched out), behold I will show you all these. And he
put his hand upon mine eyes, and I saw those things which his hands had
made, which were many; and they multiplied before mine eyes, and I
could not see the end thereof.
13
And he said unto me: This is Shinehah, which is the sun. And he said unto me: Kokob, which is star. And he said unto me: Olea, which is the moon. And he said unto me: Kokaubeam, which signifies stars, or all the great lights, which were in the firmament of heaven.
• • •
23
And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born.
24
And there stood one among them that was like unto God, and he said
unto those who were with him: We will go down, for there is space
there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth
whereon these may dwell;
34
He said there was a
book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the
former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they
sprang. He also said that the fulness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants;
• • •
40
In addition to these, he quoted the eleventh chapter of Isaiah, saying that it was about to be fulfilled. He quoted also the third chapter of Acts, twenty-second and twenty-third verses, precisely as they stand in our New Testament. He said
that that prophet was Christ; but the day had not yet come when “they
who would not hear his voice should be cut off from among the people,”
but soon would come.
41
He also quoted the second chapter of Joel, from the twenty-eighth verse to the last. He also said that this was not yet fulfilled, but was soon to be. And he further stated that the fulness of the Gentiles was soon to come in. He quoted many other passages of scripture, and offered many explanations which cannot be mentioned here.

64
“I went to the city of New York, and presented the characters which had
been translated, with the translation thereof, to Professor Charles
Anthon, a gentleman celebrated for his literary attainments. Professor
Anthon stated that the translation was correct, more so than any he had before seen translated from the Egyptian. I then showed him those which were not yet translated, and he said that they were Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters. He
gave me a certificate, certifying to the people of Palmyra that they
were true characters, and that the translation of such of them as had
been translated was also correct. I took the certificate and put it
into my pocket, and was just leaving the house, when Mr. Anthon called
me back, and asked me how the young man found out that there were gold
plates in the place where he found them. I answered that an angel of God had revealed it unto him.
65
“He then said to me, ‘Let me see that certificate.’ I accordingly took it out of my pocket and gave it to him, when he
took it and tore it to pieces, saying that there was no such thing now

The messenger who visited us on this occasion and conferred this Priesthood upon us, said that his name was John, the same that is called John the Baptist in the New Testament, and that he acted under the direction of Peter, James and John, who held the keys of the Priesthood of Melchizedek, which Priesthood, he said, would in due time be conferred on us, and that I should be called the first Elder of the Church, and he
(Oliver Cowdery) the second. It was on the fifteenth day of May, 1829,
that we were ordained under the hand of this messenger, and baptized.
